iPhone 8 To Pay Homage To The First iPhone With ‘Water Drop Design’

Updated on

Apple fans are eagerly waiting for the next-gen flagship iPhone. The Cupertino company is going to give the iPhone 8 a design makeover to mark the 10th anniversary of its iconic product. While we have seen tons of leaks and rumors about the phone’s design and features, there has been little information about its back panel. All we knew was that the phone would have a glass back.

3D glass case to give the iPhone 8 a ‘water drop design’

Now Asian publication ETNews has learned from industry sources that the new iPhone’s design would look similar to that of the original iPhone. The 10th anniversary iPhone is said to sport a “water drop design” with the help of 3D glass to pay homage to the first iPhone launched in 2007. The original iPhone had heavily rounded edges on the back. Since the iPhone 4, the company has minimized or eliminated the rear curves.

Of course, the iPhone 8 would have a huge 5.8-inch OLED display compared to the 3.5-inch LCD panel of the original iPhone. Sources told ETNews that the 3D glass cases would make curves around the left, right, top, and bottom edges of the device. The new iPhone will be significantly slimmer than the original one, which was almost 0.5-inch thick.

Though the edges and corners will be tapered, the back will still be flat to support wireless charging. It’s worth pointing out that there is no other report to support ETNews’ claims, though the publication has been accurate many times in the past. The original iPhone had a curved aluminum and plastic back panel. ETNews added that the iPhone 8 OLED display would be “relatively flat,” indicating that the curves wouldn’t be as pronounced as Samsung’s Galaxy devices.

iPhone 8 to have a bunch of AR features

Separately, Bloomberg reports that the iPhone 8 would have tons of augmented reality (AR) features and games. Tim Cook has been vocal about his interest in AR, even saying on one occasion that AR could be as big an opportunity as smartphones. Sources told Bloomberg that the Cupertino company had assembled a large team of AR experts. Apple has also made several strategic acquisitions in the areas of 3D gaming, AR hardware, and VR software.

According to the business publication, Apple is working on multiple AR products including digital glasses that could connect wirelessly to an iPhone to beam AR content to the wearer. A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal had reported that the 10th anniversary iPhone would feature specialized hardware to support augmented reality. Apple is working with its suppliers on advanced 3D sensors for the feature.

The iPhone 8 is set to be announced in September. It is said to ditch the physical home button for a virtual “function area” that would offer dynamic controls based on the apps on the screen.
