Feb. 26, the day before the Mobile World Congress is set to begin, should be an exciting day in the world of tech, especially smartphones. Samsung has just sent out media invites for an event that day, perhaps to the dismay of BlackBerry, LG and a few other smartphone makers. However, the Galaxy S8 is expected to be only a sidebar, and Samsung’s next tablet is believed to be the main event.
Galaxy Tab S3 expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress
We heard late last year that the Galaxy S8 would be unveiled on Feb. 26, but then we heard this month that Samsung doesn’t have plans to reveal its next flagship smartphone at this year’s MWC. Instead, Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S3, according to The Korea Herald.
The media outlet states that Samsung didn’t reveal what gadget it will show off at its Feb. 26 event, but it feels that the photo included on the invitation shows a bezel at the bottom of the tablet and the contour of the home button, which match those of the Galaxy Tab S3, according to the Herald’s sources.
The Tab S3 is expected to feature a 9.6-inch display and run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip. It’s expected to have a 12-megapixel camera on its back and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The Tab S3 should run on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and will likely be 5.6 millimeters thinner than the Tab S2. The Tab S3 is expected to be available for purchase in Korea in March for about 700,000 won.
Galaxy S8 could make a video appearance
The Korea Herald’s sources also reportedly said that Samsung will show off the Galaxy S8 in a one-minute teaser video at the Mobile World Congress, but the smartphone itself one actually be there. The Korean tech giant delayed the phone’s launch because of safety concerns in the wake of the Galaxy Note 7 recall. Battery issues caused explosions and resulted in the phone being banned from flights in multiple countries.
Apple seems to have capitalized upon the recall, as the iPhone 7 Plus did well during the holiday shopping quarter, which aligned perfectly with the Note 7 recall.
