Nokia D1C Price And Specs Leaked Ahead Of Launch

Updated on

Nokia is making a comeback in the fiercely competitive smartphone market. Nokia D1C is rumored to be the company’s first line of smartphones arriving early next year. Specifications of D1C have been leaked several times in the last few weeks. But a new report from Nokia Power User has revealed pricing details of Nokia D1C. If the report is to be believed, the first Nokia-branded Android smartphones will target the mid-range segment of the market.

Nokia D1C pricing: $150 and $200

According to Nokia Power User, Nokia D1C will be available in two variants. One with 2GB RAM, 13MP main camera, and 5-inch display. The second model is said to feature 3GB RAM, 16MP main camera, and a 5.5-inch Full HD display. Sources familiar with the matter told the publication that the 5-inch model would be priced at $150 while its bigger sibling would cost $200.

Nokia Power User added that the price leak does not come from their usual sources, so it should be taken with skepticism. The report added that both models will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and Adreno 505 GPU. Both D1C phones are said to come with Android 7.0 Nougat, 16GB of built-in storage, and 8MP front camera.

Foxconn to make Nokia-branded smartphones

Nokia’s comeback will be spearheaded by HMD Global. HMD has signed a 10-year licensing deal to sell Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. The iconic Finnish company’s feature phones still popular in several countries. HMD will take over Nokia’s feature phone business. Unlike other smartphone startups, HMD has many things going in its favor such as Nokia brand, an experienced management team, and Foxconn as a manufacturing partner.

Though the Nokia D1C is a mid-range phone, HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela said in an interview with the Economic Times that the company will introduce devices at a “wide range of price points” and it won’t exclude any customer segment. Launching a mid-rage device means the company’s profit margins would be low in the beginning.

Nokia D1C likely to be unveiled at MWC

HMD Global plans to convince the owners of Nokia feature phones to upgrade to its Android devices in markets like India, Russia, and Indonesia. India will be a key market for Nokia’s next phase of the journey, said Nummela. Nokia accounts for about 10% of all feature phones sold worldwide, though it has ceded some market share to Samsung, TCL, and other smaller players.

Nokia D1C is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The MWC will be held between February 27 and March 2, 2017. HMD Global has confirmed its presence at the MWC. Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri is also scheduled to speak at the MWC, which indicates that the Nokia-branded Android smartphone is just a few months away.
