Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come in Jet Black, Matte Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold. It’s a lineup from which, if you haven’t noticed, the Space Gray option has been removed. So with five colors on offer, two of them immediately stood out to consumers. They were the Jet Black iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 in Matte Black, both of which are beautiful looking handsets in their own rights, but the Jet Black is the hardest to find, which must mean it’s the best seller.
Jet Black iPhone 7 vs. iPhone 7 Matte Black
If you haven’t seen either of the iPhones in these striking new colors yet, the best way to do so is in person, either at an Apple Store or a retailer. However, the next best thing is online, so let’s have a look at each in some detail.
Matte Black
The Matte Black iPhonw 7 is made from matte anodized aluminum. Imagine an old iPod Nano; it looks sharp. In fact, it looks so dark that it’s much darker than the defunct Space Gray ever was. Of the two colors, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in this color are still available.
Jet Black
Some have described the Jet Black iPhone 7 as being “Piano Black.” The handset has been super polished to get this look; if you held one, it would feel/look like glass. As other ways it has been described, this may be a little retro. But some feel that it looks a little like the iPhone 3G with its black polycarbonate finish. Of the two colors here, this one is the harder to come by at the moment.
Which one will you choose?
Most companies are quite secretive about how their products are manufactured, but that’s not something that Apple does. Instead, it is keen to show consumers and the press how the engineering process works. For many a reason, unlike others, it wants to show how sophisticated the process of creating the iPhone has become.
To that end, it has even gone as far as producing iPhone 7 design videos, in which you can see handsets like the Jet Black iPhone 7 being created. If you take a look at the video below, narrated by Jony Ive, you will notice that all of the color variants other than the Jet Black are created with the same anodized matte finish.

Jet Black negatives
While the Jet Black iPhone 7 is considered to be the most stunning of the colors available, it is not free from problems. To start with, it is a magnet for scratches, which many have complained about on social media.
Apple itself have warned owners about the Jet Black variant, that its highly polished surface will show micro-abrasions. But this is nothing new, as the older iPhones which were made from polycarbonate were also prone to scratches. However, this is just a warning; if you decide to choose the Jet Black iPhone 7, you will need to be very careful with it. Even the most careful of owners have reported scuffs appearing in the first week of use.
When the Rose Gold iPhone 5s was released, it was considered to be almost like a piece of jewelry, and so is the Jet Black iPhone. The best thing to do is place it in a protective case, but get the case before the phone arrives. That way you’re taking no chances.
Which iPhone color you go for should just be based on the color you like, not “Scratchgate.” After all, if you’re going to spend so much money on a phone, you should protect it in a case, no matter what color it is.
