GTA 6: Next Installment A Work In Progress

Updated on

It wasn’t all that long ago that Rockstar games gave Red Dead Redemption fans the news they had wanted to hear. The company will release the second installment of the popular title in 2017. But what about that other massive juggernaut of a franchise: GTA 6? The news about Red Dead could have meant that the game would be pushed back until 2020. However, there is some interesting, if not overly clarifying news to share.

Rockstar Games on GTA 6

While Rockstar has remained tight-lipped about what’s happening with production, apparently work is underway on the sixth installment of GTA. This information comes from the game publisher’s president, Leslie Benzies. Although he didn’t say, “We are working on GTA 6,” in a recent interview with KnowYourMobile, he did say the following:

“It comes from the idea first. Where it is going to be set is the first question,” he said in an interview with the Develop (via Mobile & Apps). “Then that defines the missions — you’re doing different things in L.A. than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow. A flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in.”

Ideas in the works

Although when reading the above statement, it’s clear that Benzies did not say that GTA 6 is being worked on, his words have been taken as suggesting that ideas for the game are being discussed. In fact, many well-known publications have taken to publishing the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 as a fact, and while they may be jumping the gun to some degree, this is not unheard of, as news was published about GTA 5 production when GTA 4 was activity being supported.

GTA 6 foundations

According to Gamenguide, the only thing GTA fans can be certain of is that the foundations have been laid for GTA 6. However, it suggests that no location or settings have been agreed upon, and only preliminary production has begun. This could include artwork, drawing boards, rough modeling etc.

That being said, rumors suggest a deeper, much more developed state for the game, one which has Rockstar already deciding that a female protagonist will rule and new maps already created.

Virtual reality rumor

Rumors also suggest that Rockstar will release a VR version of GTA 6. However, this is more than likely the fantasy of VR-passionate fans. As for when and if this happens, it will depend on the fate of the technology. At the moment, the only console-based VR headset is the PSVR, which is compatible with the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

As for Microsoft and its Xbox, consumers will have to wait for the Xbox Scorpio until this time next year. It’s thought that it will be VR-ready; however, so far Microsoft has not elaborated on this.

Release Date

Most believe GTA 6 will hit the shelves, in 2020, and this could be due to a lack of resources while Rockstar develops Red Dead Redemption 2. Fans hope that the game will be announced much earlier, possibly in 2018, but we don’t expect to hear anything official until Red Dead 2 is released.
