As the price of building a software startup has come down thanks to enterprises like Amazon Web Services, the number of companies being created has skyrocketed. This is evident when looking at seed financings in the sector: 2011 saw 609 such deals completed, while 2015 logged a more than two-fold increase at 1,364.

While this jump is exciting for seed investors—giving them a larger pool of potential investments—it does make raising a follow-on round more difficult for those companies, as there’s a lot of competition.
