Without a doubt, Grand Theft Auto is one of the most beloved, celebrated, and influential video game franchises of all time. Ever since the series released the first installment back in 1997, every subsequent GTA title has been a very highly speculated upon, rumored, and anticipated release. Since the massively popular fifth installment, Grand Theft Auto 5, was released a few years back in 2013, Rockstar fans are beginning to get a bit anxious for the next release, GTA 6.
Rockstar Games, GTA 6 no-show at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting
GTA fans were collectively hoping to hear some form of news regarding the highly speculated upon and highly anticipated GTA 6 during the recently concluded PlayStation meeting. While Sony officially unveiled both the new PlayStation 4 and the upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro, Rockstar Games failed to announce anything at the event, leaving fans disappointed.
Before the event took place, rumors swirled throughout the internet, speculating that the studio would make a surprise guest appearance at the PlayStation meeting. The GTA 6 hype all began last month when a Twitter user named Tidux posted a tweet with a guitar and a star emoji along with the hashtag #PSM. Many fans took this as a teaser that Rockstar would be present at the PlayStation Meeting.
According to many current rumors, this no-show means that Rockstar is cancelling development on the new title altogether, and that doing this will allow the video game studio to focus its time and energy to further enhance GTA 5 and other Rockstar video game franchises.
Rockstar Games needs time to finish and perfect GTA 6
While Rockstar is certainly focusing on expanding the GTA 5 world and other titles such as Red Dead Redemption, the video game studio is certainly not planning on cancelling their AAA title. With new games consoles on the brink of release (PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox Scorpio), new gaming technologies (4K and virtual reality), and general widespread evolution in the video game industry, Rockstar is certainly going to make sure that they take their time to perfect GTA 6; they absolutely will not release an unfinished product just to satisfy ravenous fans.
Additionally, rumors abound state that this “delay” in officially announcing the game might have something to do with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, their parent company, potentially negotiating some sort of exclusivity deal with either Sony or Microsoft. This is also highly unlikely, as Rockstar has been releasing their games on both Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles for years now.
Expect to hear GTA 6 news sometime next year
Although GTA 6 is still not an officially confirmed game, many fans are getting anxious to hear some form of news regarding the next installment of the massively-popular open-world crime simulator. Many fans believe that now is the right time to announce the next game, as it has been three years now since the last one was released. Here’s why fans have no need to worry; they just need to be a bit patient.
Regarding GTA 6’s release date, the majority of experts expect it to be sometime in 2018. Keep in mind that this would fall in line with the general 4- to 5-year gap timeline set by Rockstar Games’ franchise. If the company decides to follow this pattern, players should expect to see the game released in the aforementioned year. If not this year, then it is very possible that the studio will unveil the game at next year’s E3 conference.
As no official announcement has yet to be made regarding GTA 6, all of this information should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. What we can expect is that Rockstar will, at some point, release GTA 6, with Red Dead Redemption 2 to precede it.
