Tesla recently claimed it has the fastest production car ever manufactured, the new Model S P100D, thus adding yet another feather to its cap. It must be noted that the LeFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder are actually faster, but the cars cost more than $1 million and are available only in limited editions. So technically the Model S P100D is the third fastest car, says Nerds Magazine.
Tesla making big leaps
Presently, neither the LeFerrari nor the Porsche 918 are in production, and the cars cannot be purchased by the average buyer (you have to be a regular Ferrari customer to own one), the report notes. In addition, both cars are tiny two-road seaters, while the Model S P100D is capable of holding five people at a time and comes with extra baggage space.
Tesla’s P85D all-wheel-drive was revealed in October 2014. The model came with Insane mode, which allowed it to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.1 seconds. During the fall of 2015, Ludicrous mode was introduced. It was capable of hitting the same acceleration in just 2.8 seconds.
On August 23, Tesla made another leap as it declared the new versions of the Model X Crossover and Model S Sedan packed with a 100kWh battery and the improved Ludicrous mode. The Model S P100D can go 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and cover 315 miles on a single charge. These features make the Model S the first electric car to have a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) range surpassing 300 miles, the report notes.
Heavily discounting Model S P90D
After announcing the Model S P100D, it appears the company is heavily discounting the price of inventory Model S P90Ds according to Electrek. Tesla’s “new inventory vehicles” must not be confused with certified pre-owned (CPO) cars. The new inventory vehicles are those that have never been purchased but instead are used as display vehicles or service loaners.
They are marked down at about $1 per mile and a percentage for every month since their production. Currently, the automaker is listing 22 Model S P90Ds on its website. The cars listed on the website start at $112,300 and go up to $139,600. If you order a new Model P90D, it will cost exactly the same amount, depending on some options. The Ludicrous battery upgrade, which costs additional $10,000, is not available on a new P90D anymore, although “they are on most P90D’s [sic] listed in new inventories,” says Electrek.
So they are already quite heavily discounted, but Electrek says new buyers are offered more discounts at Tesla’s store.
