T-Mobile Quietly Drops HTC 10 After Just Two Months

Updated on

HTC was already having a tough time as its smartphone sales were on a continuous decline, as a result of which it was seeing consecutive quarterly losses. Now its woes have increased further thanks to T-Mobile.

Why did T-Mobile drop the HTC 10?

HTC’s latest flagship, the HTC 10, is its only hope for making a comeback, but unfortunately the device has been dropped by T-Mobile, one of the biggest carriers in the U.S. The Android device has disappeared from store shelves, and a post on Reddit pegged the date of the disappearance at July 21. This means that it took just two months for the carrier to drop the device since it was put on sale.

The handset was available at T-Mobile starting May 18. The bigger concern is that no one noticed this happening. It may be that the device was gathering dust on the shelves. T-Mobile was probably not able to sell many units of the HTC 10 in the two months it was on the shelf.

If someone is interested in buying the HTC 10, but his/her preferred carrier is T-Mobile, it is possible to pay the full price of the unlocked device upfront. The device now costs $100 less than its earlier price, and this might be of help to prospective buyers. If someone buys the device directly from HTC in August, he/she will get a free pair of JBL headphones worth $199 and an additional $100 credit that can be used to purchase other accessories.

A good device, but still it was dropped

The HTC 10 is undoubtedly a device to be proud of. The device comes with an aluminum shell that gained huge popularity with the M7 device. The Android experience on the device is great too, and it boasts of decent hardware as well. The device has a 5.2-inch QHD LCD display with 4GB of RAM and 32/64GB of built-in storage, plus a slot for a microSD card. It runs on the powerful Snapdragon 820 processor and has a 12MP UltraPixel rear camera (f/1.8, 1.55um). The camera has been improved, but it isn’t comparable with those of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

Despite that, the device is no less than the LG G5 and other flagship Android devices. However, even this is not enough it seems. Comparatively, the OnePlus is offering all these features for one-third the price.

T-Mobile’s dropping the device comes as a serious blow to the Taiwanese manufacturer as the question is now about survival. The company’s dependency on sales from other carriers and countries has now increased. Maybe the next device, possibly a new One A9, will help the company gain back market share, provided it has the reserves to invest in it. Also there are rumors that HTC will be manufacturing the next two Nexus devices, and hopefully they will bring back good times for the company.
