Perhaps ridiculously fast should be called ludicrously fast as the new 100kWh battery option along with Ludicrous Mode for the Model S now sees the car go from a stop to 60 MPH in 2.5 seconds clocking in just behind the Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari’s LaFerrari. Thing is, the Tesla Model S doesn’t cost well over a million dollars as the aforementioned others do.

The new battery also sees the Model X going from 0-60MPH in 2.9 seconds rather than the already quick 3.2 seconds the SUV was able to manage prior to today’s announcement and release. As well as the pure speed in ludicrous mode, the new batter adds 10kWh of storage which, with normal driving, will extend the range of the Model S from 294 miles to 315 miles Model S P100D’s already enjoy with a 90kWh battery.
Surprisingly, the drivetrain hasn’t changed but rather simply gets a boost from the larger battery. The new option want come cheap with the Model S P100D with Ludicrous Mode starting at $134,500. If you were to order it, delivery may take awhile as the 100kWh battery pack will have its production limited to around 200 a week.
With the addition of this new battery to the family both the Model S and the Model X can be purchased with battery options of 60kWh, 75kWh, 90kWh, and 100kWh.
With the announcement, Tesla quickly acknowledged that this car is not for everyone but the price that you pay will help Tesla in the production of the Model 3.
“It’s a pretty big change in the battery module and pack technology,” said JB Straubel, CTO of Tesla, in his remarks today. “It’s a complete redo on the cooling architecture.”
