How To Customize Your Pokemon GO Avatar

Updated on

Niantic rolled out an update to the cultural sensation that is Pokemon GO, and it was released for iOS and Android devices today, bringing with it new features to the mobile application as well as some small changes in the user interface.

A Fresh, New Look For Your Pokemon GO Avatar

One of the biggest and most-wanted additions included in the update is the opportunity for players to customize their avatar (which was previously only possible at the beginning of the game). This new addition allows players for a higher level of personalization in Pokemon GO, allowing you to finally represent Team Mystic (or whichever team you’re a part of) with a fresh, color-coordinated hat.

A user’s inability to change their avatar’s appearance after initially choosing their skin tone, hair color, and outfit was one of the louder frustrations people made known early on when the game first launched. If your Pokémon can evolve, it only makes sense that your avatar be able to do the same, right? So how does one go about switching up your avatar’s appearance? It’s quite simple.

A Fresh Cut? New Pants? It’s All Here.

To access the avatar customization menu, first tap on the face of your avatar at the lower left-hand corner of the map screen. This brings up your avatar screen, which displays information such as your XP, medals, and the team you fight for.

On this screen, tap on the icon with three bars in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Two options will then pop up: Journal and Customize. Hit customize.

This brings up the customization menu, and from here, you can change just about anything on your avatar. Your choices include skin color, hair color, eye color, hat style, shirt style, pants style, shoe type, and backpack type. You can even change your gender if you’d like.

All you have to do is tap on the icon of the item you would like to change about your avatar and use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to scroll through your options. Once you find something that suits you, just tap on it and it will be placed on your avatar.

Be sure to tap the checkmark button on the right-hand side of the screen to save your choices. If you back out of the customization screen without clicking the checkmark, all of your changes will be lost.

And ta-da! A fresh new look for your intrepid young trainer. With those new duds, you will no doubt have the confidence to get out there and “catch ‘em all!”
