Kansas Cop Dismissed For Threatening Black Child On Facebook

Following the escalating tensions between police officers and the black community, an unnamed officer in Kansas has been fired for comments posted on the Facebook page of a black woman, threatening her young daughter.

Kansas Police Officer’s offensive remarks

The Kansas City Star has reported that the officer of the law was fired immediately after the comments came to light on Friday. In a chilling and scary comment, the man alluded to the Black Lives Matter protest that had just happened in Dallas where five police were ultimately killed.

The man wrote on LaNaydra Williams’ Facebook page, next to a collection of pictures of her daughter, “We’ll see how much her life matters soon. Better be careful leaving your info open where she can be found :) Hold her close tonight it’ll be the last time.”

Williams clicked on the name to bring up the details of the author, and was shocked to find the perpetrator in police uniform.

She said she had no idea who the officer was, that they had never interacted before, and didn’t know why he would be on her Facebook page. She told her local news station KCTV, “I saw that he was a cop and I was like, “This is outrageous. This is not acceptable at all.”

Local Police react swiftly and decisively

She immediately contacted her local police station, Overland Park Police. and spoke with Chief Francis Donchez Jr.. Donchez confirmed that one of his officers had made the comment and explained that the offender had been dismissed that day, and that the department was launching a criminal investigation.

Donchez said in a written statement, “This quick action demonstrates our commitment to our core values, including integrity and respect.”

Broader setting for actions

The incident comes after protests over the shooting of two black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, in Louisiana and Minnesota respectively, by police officers. In a resulting Black Lives Matter protest, complaining about police racism, Micah Johnson shot and killed five police officers.

As tensions between the police and the black community run high, President Obama has appealed for calm.
