Sony Launching PlayStation VR Demos This Weekend

Updated on

PlayStation’s entry into the virtual reality realm has almost arrived. This is an event that ten years ago might have seemed unbelievable, but in just under four months time, PlayStation VR will be a real piece of gaming technology that people will be able to purchase. While there is still much speculation on whether VR will indeed be a large part of the future of gaming, Sony is giving U.S. gamers a chance to try out the headset for themselves.

If you’re a PlayStation owner and have yet to try out virtual reality technology to some degree, then you’ve probably been wondering if it’s worth it to shell out the money for a new PlayStation VR. Will you enjoy the experience? Will it give you motion sickness? Or is it something that you will spend a ton of money on only to collect dust on your shelf?

PlayStation VR – Try it before you buy it

Sony announced earlier this week at the E3 conference that the PlayStation VR will arrive on October 13. Upon release, the technology will available at two price points: a “barebones” VR unit for $399, or a package that includes the headset, a PlayStation Camera (which is mandatory) and two Move controllers (which you’ll probably want to have).

However, for many fans, this release date is just a bit too far away, and many gamers waiting to see the device go live might have to wait longer before purchasing their own. As preorders for the technology have already been sold out, many people want to have the chance to test it out before shelling out their dough to get in line for the next batch.

For those that were hoping to get a chance to test out the headset, here is your chance! Sony is planning to hold an event in which gamers can test out the PlayStation VR.

According to a new blog post from Sony, the company will be showing off the PlayStation VR with playable demo units at various retail stores over the next two days. This demo event will allow excited gamers to test out the technology before more preorders open up.

“Earlier this week at E3 we announced that PlayStation VR will officially launch in North America on October 13. But we know many of you have been asking – ‘When can I try PlayStation VR out and see some of the great games to come?,’” read Sony’s blog post. “Well, tomorrow and Saturday (June 17 and 18), we’re going to offer PS VR demos at more than 30 Best Buy and GameStop locations across the US and Canada.”

A glimpse at the future for PlayStation

This is an important opportunity for Sony to demonstrate to it consumers why virtual reality is the next step in gaming technology and how the PlayStation VR works with the PS4. Some of the games that will be showcased at the demos include PlayStation VR Worlds, EVE: Valkyrie, Battlezone, Headmaster, and SuperHyperCube.

Sony also added that the program will be expanded to more than 300 more locations throughout the United States and Canada starting June 24.

Sony has launched a website with a searchable map that details the entire list of locations that will be showcasing the PlayStation VR demo. If you aren’t located near any of the places, you aren’t entirely out of luck as Sony will be showcasing the PS VR on their “Road to Greatness” roadshow this summer.
