BlackBerry Priv Users On T-Mobile Getting Marshmallow

Updated on

BlackBerry Priv users on T-Mobile are now receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow software update. The device was unveiled in September 2015, and by early November, the smartphone was made available for sale.

New software brings several improvements

Google’s latest OS brings a lot of improvements. Earlier, users could store files only on external media such as a microSD, but Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s Adoptable Storage feature makes it possible for device owners to use a microSD card as internal storage.

Android says, “When external storage media is adopted, it’s formatted and encrypted to only work with a single Android device at a time. Because the media is strongly tied to the Android device that adopted it, it can safely store both apps and private data for all users.”

Google’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow comes with improved app permissions as well. This means that now Android device owners will be able to exercise greater control on the permissions granted to downloaded apps on the phone. Also customers will be able to choose or deny permissions individually.

New features named Doze and App Standby also come with the latest software update, helping preserve the handset’s battery life. According to Android, these two features are designed to manage the behavior of all apps running on Android 6.0 or higher, irrespective of whether they are specifically targeting API level 23.

Users are advised to test their apps in Doze and App Standby modes and then make the necessary adjustments to their code so that they get the best experience.

BlackBerry Priv available at a big discount

The Priv is the first BlackBerry device that runs onAndroid instead of the company’s proprietary BB OS or BB 10. It came with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and the Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the first major update pushed out to the device.

The BlackBerry Priv is not a very old smartphone, but over time, it has failed to attract many customers. As a result, T-Mobile has confirmed that it won’t sell it anymore. At the time of launch, the Priv was offered for $799.99, but in the past few months, it has lost a lot of value.

The BlackBerry Priv was available for $649.99 at Best Buy, while on Amazon, it is available for slightly more than $480. Newegg has made the biggest reduction in price, selling the device for $374.99, which represents a discount of 53% on the device’s original price.

On Tuesday, BlackBerry shares closed down 0.72% at $6.86. Year to date, the stock is down almost 27%.
