Aubrey McClendon, a pioneer of the US shale gas boom, and former CEO of Chesapeake Energy, died in a car crash (involving no other vehicles) on March 2nd, just one day after he was indicted for the supposed rigging of oil and gas lease prices.

This led many to assume that the charismatic entrepreneur had taken his own life. After two months of investigating, the police have stated they found nothing to suggest suicide and it may in fact have been a terrible accident.

A spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police, Captain Paco Balderrama said, “We were unable to find any evidence or information that would lead us to believe it was anything other than a vehicular accident.”

However, the report also does not dismiss the notion of suicide, so this is unlikely to put the matter to rest. Balderrama added “We may never know one-hundred percent what happened.”

McClendon drove a Chevy Tahoe, but had had it converted to run on natural gas. When the car hit a bridge it burst into flames. His body had to be cut from the vehicle and dental records used to confirm the identity.

Nothing to suggest he was considering suicide

Friends and relatives interviewed by the police say they saw nothing to suggest he was considering suicide. Although the indictment had come the day before, it had been rumored for a long time, and he had gathered a formidable legal team which he believed would win the case.

The probe made a number of points which suggest that it was just an accident. He was known for driving fast, and without seatbelt. He had even boasted of his abilities to drive while composing text messages or emails.

The spot he died was a known black spot, and interestingly, there had been another fatal crash there just a month prior. Also, he was a well-known workaholic, often working long into the night. One theory states that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel of the car.

A final report from the medical examiner is due to be released soon.
