Microsoft has just released its Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14342 for testers. The new build brings 25 bug fixes and several feature updates. The biggest highlight of the latest build is that it lets users install Edge browser extensions directly from the Windows Store instead of a local file. Microsoft’s corporate vice-president for engineering systems, Gabe Aul said in a blog post that it has removed the WiFi Sense feature that lets you share WiFi networks with your contacts.
Install Edge extensions from Windows Store
The Fast Ring version of build 14342 allows you to install Adblock and Adblock Plus directly from Windows Store. The adblocking apps went live on the Windows Store only a few days ago. However, they currently work only with Edge on Windows 10 Preview. These tools will arrive as part of the Anniversary Update later this summer. Other Edge browser extensions available from the Windows Store include Microsoft Translator, OneNote Web Clipper, Mouse Gestures, and Pin It button.
Users who have extensions already installed will have to reinstall them from the Store. Aul said that the build 14342 also features real-time web notifications for Edge. It will allow participating websites to push out app-like notifications to the Windows Action Center. The executive also highlighted a few remaining bugs like PCs running Norton Antivirus experiencing a blue screen of death.
Windows 10 update to ditch a controversial feature
The Redmond-based company confirmed that it would remove the WiFi Sense feature that allows you to share your WiFi login details with your contacts. The feature has been controversial ever since its introduction with Windows Phone. Not many people want to share their WiFi details with their contacts. Gabe Aul said, “The cost of updating the code to keep this feature working combined with low usage and low demand made this not worth further investment.”
However, Microsoft said it would not remove the WiFi Sense feature that lets users automatically connect to open hotspots, even though security experts have expressed concerns over it. Microsoft continues to tweak its Anniversary Update, which is expected to be available to existing users in July.
