On Thursday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the electric car company’s first mass market vehicle, the Model 3. The Model 3 will cost $35,000 and have a range of roughly 215 miles per charge. Tesla indicated that more than 100,000 reservations had been placed for the Model 3 on Thursday.

Credit Suisse analysts opined:

We believe this much interest, generated only through word of mouth and modest social media promotion from Tesla, in a car that no one has seen yet, is really astounding. We continue to believe that Tesla
has a significant headstart in a technology that will eventually dominate automotive. But even if others eventually catch up, it will be very difficult to compete with the perception of Tesla as the clear leader. Therefore we
continue to see demand as no issue…profitability remains an open issue, but we continue to believe that will come.

While Evercore analysts note:

If Tesla does reach 117.4k Model 3 orders by year end, it will be a huge achievement, in our view. We are not aware of any auto product, or for that matter any consumer product, which has taken >100k orders with a c$1k down payment; let alone a product that consumers will likely not receive for at least 18 months. Yet again, it seems that investors are expecting Tesla to tear up the rule book.

From our sources who placed orders in London (Oxford Street) or on Long Island (Manhasset) earlier today, the feedback was reasonably similar. There was notable traffic during the first couple of hours but an understandable slowdown by the middle of the morning.
