Samsung has just launched its flagship Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones. It is unlikely to unveil the next generation Galaxy S8 before early next year. But whenever the S8 comes out, we can expect it to feature a mind-boggling camera that will put competitors to shame. No doubt the Galaxy S7 packed an impressive camera with dual-pixel technology, but the S8 is likely to sport an even better camera.
Samsung moves staff from NX to smartphone department
Sources familiar with the matter told PhotoRumors that Samsung was hard at work to make its flagship smartphone snapper as good as a standalone camera. Recently, the Korean electronics giant said it would not release any new cameras in its NX lineup, at least in certain markets. Sources told PhotoRumors that Samsung was moving its core NX camera department staff to its smartphone camera unit.
Reports suggest that the new camera sensor could be incorporated in the Galaxy Note 6 or Galaxy S8. However, it is more likely to make it to the S8 rather than Note 6. That’s because the Note 6 will enter production sometime in June or July, which is too short a timeframe to develop, test and add the sensor in the phablet. The Galaxy S8 is expected to arrive in March 2017.
Will Galaxy S8 boast of a 24MP camera?
PhotoRumors reports that Samsung is currently working on a 1/2.3-inch sensor, and plans to eventually make a huge 1/1.7-inch sensor with f/1.4 aperture. It would mean a wider sensor, allowing more light to get through the lens to yield better images. It also suggests that the new sensor could up the pixel count to 24MP from 12MP in Galaxy S7. It is worth noting that the sensor is intended for regular smartphones rather than niche camera phones.
Samsung is also working on a new smartphone camera UI that is based on the NX camera menu system. It will blur the line between a standalone camera and a smartphone snapper. Though the Galaxy S8’s camera quality may not match the DSLR camera, it will give you a strong reason to leave your real cameras at home.
