iPhone Pro: Apple To Launch A Special Version Of iPhone 7 Plus

Updated on

Apple is reportedly working on two variants of its next-gen flagship iPhone 7 Plus, one with a single-lens camera and another with a dual-lens camera. Now Chinese publication MyDrivers has learned from its sources that the dual-camera version of the iPhone 7 Plus will be called iPhone Pro.

iPhone SE, iPhone Pro, iPad Pro: Apple to change its naming pattern?

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a research note in January that the standard iPhone 7 and 7 Plus would feature a single-lens camera. He suggested that Apple would also introduce a special version of the iPhone 7 Plus with a dual-camera system that would incorporate two 12MP sensors. One of them is said to feature a wider field of view and optical image stabilization, while another will have a 2-3x telephoto lens. It would help users capture DSLR-quality images. Kuo believes that Apple would use LinX Imaging‘s technology for the dual-camera system.

The rumored iPhone Pro may cost even more than the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple has used number-based naming for its flagship iPhones since 2008. So, it is unclear why the company would move away from its traditional naming pattern to call a high-end device iPhone Pro. The tech giant is gearing up to launch a 4-inch smartphone called iPhone SE later this month. The upcoming 9.7-inch iPad is also rumored to be called iPad Pro rather than iPad Air 3.

iPhone 7 to lack waterproofing

Japanese website Mac Otakara reports that the iPhone 7 will have the same dimensions as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. However, the upcoming device will be slimmer by at least 1mm. It echoes recent rumors that the new phone’s rear camera would be flush with its metal casing. The next-gen iPhone will also do away with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Mac Otakara backs Ming-Chi Kuo’s claim that the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 would feature a single-lens camera, while the dual-lens system would be reserved for a 5.5-inch model. The report does not specifically name the iPhone Pro. For months, there have been rumors that the iPhone 7 would be waterproof. Several waterproofing-related patents granted to Apple lent credibility to those rumors. But Mac Otakara says the new devices will not be waterproof. They are said to carry over the same level of water resistance as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
