Chelsea Handler’s Netflix Talk Show Will Be Called ‘Chelsea’

Updated on

Netflix will soon have a talk show from Chelsea Handler, but the show’s title was not known until now. On Thursday in a Periscope Q&A, Handler told her fans that the upcoming show will be titled Chelsea. Handler also revealed that the 30-minute series, which is the first-ever talk show on the streaming giant, will not be live, though it will incorporate a live studio audience.

Three hours to finalize the title

Handler was seated next to Gloria Allred in a press conference-esque setup during the live streaming session. Allred did not say a word, and there was no explanation for her being in the session.

Handler said, “Good morning everybody. Or good evening. I have a few announcements to make and then I will take a few questions and probably a few Vicodin.”

Handler announced her show’s title and showed off her signature sarcastic comedic chops, saying that they had thought long and hard about the title for her new Netflix show. With the team from the streaming giant, they also hired a digital department and some small children who work in various countries to help with the title. After two to three long hours, they came up with the name Chelsea.

“That’s it — just ‘Chelsea.’ Not ‘Just Chelsea’ — ‘Chelsea.’ Because that’s my name. I look forward to not thinking my last name is Chelsea Lately because that’s not even a real last name. My name is Chelsea Handler and it’s nice to meet you.”

What to expect from this Netflix show

Handler said the show will be streaming in 190 countries, and this restricts them from going live on Netflix. She added that they are going to tape, and then her team will stream it in every other country and territory they’re in. The talk show will be on three days per week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), and 90 episodes will air per year. Handler jokes that this schedule gives her a four-day weekend.

Handler says that this show will have similarities to her four-part Netflix documentary series Chelsea Does in regards to covering “real topics with a sense of humor.” The comedienne has celebrities, athletes and politicians on her guest wish list, and she is hoping to get both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Handler said she loves working with Netflix, mostly because of its worldwide reach.

“It makes me able to do stories that are global,” she said.
