The results of new tests are out, and the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge offer better water protection than the Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
However the durability tests reveal that if you are at high risk of dropping your phone on hard surfaces, you might still be better off with an iPhone 6s. The tests show that the Galaxy S7 is better at standing up to water, but it still suffers permanent damage.
Apple iPhone 6s certainly not water resistant
Gadget-warranty company SquareTrade carried out a round of torture tests to see which high-end smartphone was the hardiest. The researchers put handsets from both the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6s ranges under water for 30 minutes, at a depth of 1.5 meters.
While both of the Galaxy smartphones still worked after the test, their audio was muffled and distorted on a permanent basis. On the other hand the iPhone 6s suffered damage to its audio system and had moisture trapped under the glass, while the iPhone 6s Plus became a brick after 30 minutes underwater. Apple has never claimed that its high-end smartphone was water resistant, despite persistent rumors.
Samsung previously claimed that the Galaxy S7 handsets were water-resistant at depths of up to 5 feet for 30 minutes. However it later updated that information to say that they would resist water at under 4 feet for 30 minutes.
Samsung still claiming that Galaxy S7 is IP68-rated
It is important to note that the handsets have received IP68 ratings due to the first claim. However if that is not the case and they can only resist for 30 minutes at under 4 feet, they should receive an IP67 rating.
The company is still claiming that the phones are IP68 rated. A spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment,
Another interesting point from the video is that the Apple iPhone 6s performs much better in tumble tests. SquareTrade put the handsets through a grueling new test, and the iPhone 6s was the only phone that survived with the screen intact.
The Galaxy S7 Edge was the first to break under a bendability test. If you like to take your phone with you when you are doing extreme sports like parkour or snorkeling, it might be worth taking the results of the tests into account.
