As smartphones get more and more powerful while getting slimmer and slimmer, something has to give. That something comes in the form of dwindling battery life and there is very little you can do about it.
Apple confirms closing apps wont do the job
LG might have it right with their flagship phone the G5 as it has a battery, that when failing, can be swapped out for one that is fully charged. Neither Samsung’s Galaxy S7 or Apple’s iconic iPhones have this luxury. As a result users continue to blog their way to better battery life, it turns out there is no easy fix. You would think that closing a number of apps running at the same time would go a long ways to extending battery life but, at least in the case of the iPhone will not do the job.
This was recently confirmed by Apple’s senior VP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi.
The fact that Apple CEO, Tim Cook, actually forwarded an email from an iPhone user asking whether or not closing apps extended the battery life of an iPhone is pretty cool.
The answer, however, likely didn’t make the sender of the email any happier.
Slim phone, smaller battery
Consumers have forced the hand of smartphone designers and manufactures, we demand larger screen, thinner phones and more power. This, quite simply, doesn’t work with today’s battery technology. If design and overall sexiness is to be achieved, the battery is going to be the first thing that must be made smaller. Smaller battery equals shorter battery life. There is no magical solution at present and your need for multiple chargers will continue for quite some time.
For someone who once carried a Motorola mobile phone that weighed about 10 pounds around in a bag, I wouldn’t have a problem with a phone that weighed a few extra ounces and was double the thickness of the iPhone 6S if it meant having a battery that didn’t require charging three times a day.
This is especially the case when closing apps not in use doesn’t improve the battery life of the iPhone one bit.
