According to reports from local media there is a possible armed man at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
The facility is located in Balboa Park, and a caller reported seeing an armed man at the site. No shots have been fired and security personnel are investigating the call.
Personnel told to shelter in place and not move into area
Around 7:50 a.m. local time the NMCSD made a post on its Facebook page telling users that a caller had reported an armed man at the site. The anonymous call was made around 7.30 a.m., reporting a shooter on the fourth floor of the hospital. The caller then hung up.
Officials issued a code white and staff were told to stay inside and shelter while authorities looked into the reports. Service members and their families have been told not to move into the area.
An unnamed security official cited by USA Today said that security personnel had found a bullet on the ground.
“Investigators have thoroughly searched the building and not found anything yet,” spokesman Brian O’Rourke said about 9 a.m. “They are going floor by floor, it’s not a quick operation.”
The entrance to the hospital remains closed. At one point a woman in labor was turned away before being taken to another medical facility by paramedics.
Previous hoax call reported at site
On January 26 a shooting was reported at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, but the reports turned out to be false. Investigators shut down the facility for a number of hours as they looked into the report.
The previous investigation focused on Building 26. Inside the building are offices, barracks for wounded personnel and a gym facility.
Naval Medical Center San Diego is an 85-acre site where 6,000 active-duty military personnel and civilians work. It is known for its teaching and research facilities.
At the same time an “alleged incident” at the Fort Gordon U.S. army facility in Augusta, Georgia, has led to a lockdown at the facility. No further details have been provided.
However local TV station WRDW said that a planned training exercise could have caused concern among local residents who heard shooting and explosions.
