Galaxy S7: Samsung Plans Initial Production Run Of 5M Units

Updated on

Rumors about Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone Galaxy S7 have gathered pace in recent weeks. Now South Korean publication the Electronic Times has learned from inside sources that Samsung will finish development of the Galaxy S7 next month. The device will enter mass production in early February. Sources told the Korean publication that Samsung is planning initial production run of 5 million units of its next-gen flagship smartphone.

Samsung to produce 1.6M Galaxy S7 Edge units

The Electronic Times reports that there will be two versions of Galaxy S7: a flat-screen model with a 5.2-inch display, and a 5.5-inch version called Galaxy S7 Edge with a curved screen. The approach of launching two phones with different screen sizes is similar that adopted by Apple. The world’s largest smartphone maker will be producing 3.3 million units of the standard S7 and approximately 1.6 million units of the S7 Edge.

There have been rumors that Samsung will unveil the S7 line in February on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The Korean publication says Galaxy S7 will go on sale in February, just days after the official announcement. Just a few days ago, a leaked internal presentation from the world’s largest telecom carrier China Mobile showed that the device is set to go for sale in China in February.

Samsung may also launch a third version of Galaxy S7

Last year, Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in March and the phones went on sale in April. There have been rumors that Samsung may also launch a third variant called Galaxy S7 Plus early next year. All the S7 versions will feature iris eye scanner that you can use to unlock your device, verify your identity, and do many other things that a fingerprint sensor does. The iris scanner may prompt Samsung to increase the price of its next-gen flagship smartphone.

Among other things, the Galaxy S7 will reportedly feature 4GB RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 processor, 20MP main camera with 4K video capabilities, 8MP front-camera, and a huge 3,500mAh battery. The device will also have a pressure-sensitive display technology similar to Apple’s 3D Touch.
