BlackBerry Priv’s Camera On Par With iPhone 6S, 6 Plus

Updated on

BlackBerry’s Priv appear to be doing well since its launch, and now there is one more reason for the Canadian company to be proud of its flagship Android device. The exact and official sales figures for the Priv device are not known, but the device has earned an overall score of 82 from DxOMark, which is one of the most-cited authorities when it comes to benchmarks for digital photography.

On par with iPhone 6s

What’s interesting is that DxOMark has put the device on the same level as the latest iPhone 6s. The device trails the Galaxy S6 edge+, the Galaxy Note 5, and the iPhone 6s Plus, but it is ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Nexus 6 — a good sign for the company.

With an average score of 82, the Priv secured the same rank as the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and the Sony Xperia Z3+. If we break the score down, its score of 82 in still photography is less than these four devices, but in videos, it trumps all with a score of 81.

“Ranking inside the current top ten smartphones in our database of mobile phone image quality, the BlackBerry’s PRIV now ranks alongside the best smartphone devices we’ve tested from Apple, Sony, and Samsung,” DxOMark noted.

BlackBerry not surprised about high score

The BlackBerry Priv’s dynamic range performance (execution of difficult operations with ease) won it top marks from DxOMark, a leading French developer of image processing software that has tested over 9,000 digital cameras, lenses and smartphone cameras.

DxOMark reported that the colors were strong, both indoors and outdoors, but some white balance problems were observed outdoors, resulting in some yellow, blue or pink casts. The detail preservation of the smartphone even in low-light scenarios is also praiseworthy, according to the benchmarking site.

The BlackBerry Priv performed well in terms of video recording as well. DxOMark reported that noise reduction is better in video than in still photo,s in bright light at least. However, in low light, the camera does give visible frame shifts and distortions – a behavior common to most mobile videos.

BlackBerry claims that such a high score does not come as a surprise. The device, which comes with an 18 megapixel sensor, also boasts a camera certified by famed Schneider-Kreuznach through its U.S. subsidiary Schneider Optics.
