Twitter Unveils One Direction Emojis To Find World’s Biggest Fans

Twitter and One Direction have teamed up to conduct a new global competition for finding out the country with the biggest fans of the boy band. Those fans will receive their own One Direction Twitter emojis as a reward.

The Twitter campaign will start Saturday at midnight GMT (or Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern). 1D fans from 140 countries will get the opportunity to show their loyalty to the band, for which they will be required to use designated country hashtags ranging from #11DAF for Afghanistan to #1DZW for Zimbabwe. The most fervent top ten countries will receive custom designed emojis. The winners will be able to use the same hashtags that will turn into victorious emojis.

Georgina Parnell, Head of Entertainment Partnerships at Twitter U.K., said, “Only on Twitter could you bring together fans from right across the globe in celebration of the world’s biggest boy band. We’ve already had over 700m One Direction tweets in 2015.” Parnell said they are waiting eagerly to see which country the adds most this weekend to earn one of Twitter’s exclusive One Direction emojis.

Twitter has released six exclusive emojis in advance of the fan face-off. They feature all four members of One Direction together and individually and their new album. Those six emojis feature Harry Styles (@Harry_Styles), Louis Tomlinson (@Louis_Tomlinson), Liam Payne (@Real_Liam_Payne), Niall Horan (@NiallOfficial) and their brand new album Made in the A.M.

When a user uses hashtags – #1D, #1DLouis, #1DHarry, #1DNiall, #1DLiam and #MadeinTheAM, their corresponding 1D emoj’s will automatically appear after the tweet. The emojis are live now. After Twitter unveiled the new emojis, the top trending hashtag was #1DHarry.

Twitter is also busy with preparations for the second Democratic primary debate. Twitter’s head of news, government and elections, Adam Sharp, plans to make the platform “the world’s largest couch” where users will be able to experience the debate and get instant feedback at ease. For Saturday’s Democratic primary debate, Twitter has teamed up with CBS News to mark its official presence in the debate.

On Thursday, Twitter shares closed down 1.4% at $26.13. Year to date, the stock is down by over 27%, while in the last one month, it is down by over 9%.
