Bugatti has been around for over a century but it’s its work on the Veyron that makes Bugatti a household name in gaming and motorsports.
The Veyron and beyond
Bugatti’s Veyron, or more specifically the Veyron EB 16.4 was a triumph for the automaker which had and has the distinction of being the fastest street-legal production car ever made. The 16.4 is a reference to the 16 cylinder engine paired with four superchargers that allow the Veyron to get from 0-60 MPH in 2.2 seconds and reach a top speed of over 250 MPH. While those numbers may sound absurd, the price tag well over a $1,000,000 wasn’t absurd enough to keep the company from selling each of the 450 Veyrons it produced.
That chapter, however, has closed and Bugatti has moved on and focused on its next model believed to be unveiled next year at the Geneva Auto Show in March. Reports suggest that the car will have a 1,480 horsepower engine, a price tag of over $4,000,000 and will be called the Chiron.
In the meantime
Prior to the release of the Chiron, the company has something new to show us and it’s doing it at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Well, the company has produced one “real” car prior to its release into the video game world of Gran Turismo as part of the The Vision Gran Turismo challenge. They challenge dates to 2013 when Kazunori Yamauchi asked design studios all over the world to design “cars” to be introduced into Gran Turismo 6.
Bugatti’s Vision does not disappoint though will only be driven on a gaming console. If one drives it on the famed Le Mans track after downloading, the car will reach speeds of over 250 miles an hour on four separate occasions.
Bugatti’s future
While the Vision Grand Turismo is stunning it’s also quite silly and won’t see production. That said, certain elements are expected to crossover to the Chiron in the near future.
“Bugatti’s design DNA has reached a new stage in its evolution,” Bugatti design chief Achim Anscheidt said in a statement. “Given the nature of the project, our concept car for Vision Gran Turismo is overstated and pushes performance to the limits, but its progressive design language will clearly show the direction that Bugatti’s design will take in the coming years.”
