A Look At Russia’s Deadliest Weapons For Future War

Updated on

Russia has intensified its nuclear rhetoric in recent years as NATO continues to build up its military presence in Eastern Europe to limit Moscow’s ‘sphere of influence.’ Military experts have said that the primary reason Russia flaunts its nuclear stockpile is because its conventional strength has deteriorated since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

While using nuclear threats to counter Western aggression, Russia continues to develop highly advanced weapons for a future war. We Are The Mighty has compiled a list of the deadliest weapons Moscow is currently developing.

1- ‘Aircraft carrier killer’ nuclear submarines

Last month, Russia announced plans to develop two nuclear submarines: one interceptor designed to defend ballistic submarines from attack, and another would be an “aircraft carrier killer.” The second submarine will be a cruise missile carrier to destroy coastal and surface targets, says The Moscow Times.

2- Hypersonic missiles

A report from the IHS Jane’s Intelligence claimed that Russia tested its hypersonic missile Yu-71 in February, which was a failure. But IHS estimates Russia to have developed and deployed up to 24 nuclear-capable Yu-71s by 2025. Moscow is also jointly developing BrahMos-II hypersonic cruise missile in collaboration with India. The two countries have already developed BrahMos supersonic missiles.

3- PAK-DA strategic bomber

Moscow expects to start inducting the fifth-generation Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA in its Air Force by 2017. The country’s next-gen strategic bomber PAK-DA will be based on T-50. Reports suggest that PAK-DA will be a subsonic bomber with a range of 7,500 miles. It would be capable of carrying 30 tons of payload.

4- Technology to “shut down” enemy weapons

Last month, Russia inducted into its Navy a spy ship capable of “tracking all elements” of the U.S. missile defense system. Moscow is currently developing an electronic warfare system that can confuse sensors on the enemy missiles, jam communications, and make it impossible for the enemy to detect Russian forces. It can also be used to “switch off” enemy defenses during a Russian attack.

5- Russia is developing lasers

Recently, the U.S. Navy tested a laser gun that destroys any approaching threats within seconds. Russia claims that its own laser develop program was not far behind. In fact, the Russian lasers could destroy drones, vessels, artillery vehicles, and other weapons that the U.S. relies on.

The country is also developing a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, but it is unlikely to enter into active service before 2030.
