Facebook hopes to enhance the overall social media experience with floating videos. The new feature is exclusive to desktop users right now and is similar to a feature on Tumblr. Users can activate the feature by simply clicking on a button located at the bottom-right of the embedded video.
Facebook’s new feature
The new feature was first spotted by The Next Web, but the feature is rolling out slowly to users. According to an informal poll, roughly four out of five users claimed they have seen the button on their feeds. Facebook wants to give social video giant YouTube a run for its money by adding more videos and subsequent ads.
Future data center in Fort Worth
Facebook also hopes to break some serious ground with a new data center in Fort Worth, Tex. The data center will be a 250,000-square foot facility that will likely triple in size to 750,000 square feet. Data center operations director Ken Patchette offered more details about the project:
“Our Fort Worth facility will be one of the most advanced, efficient, and sustainable data centers in the world. It will feature the latest in our Open Compute Project hardware designs — including Yosemite, Wedge, and 6-pack — and it will be cooled using outdoor air instead of energy-intensive air conditioners. (Yes, we can make that work even in the middle of the kinds of summers we have here in Texas)”
The new data center will be completely powered by renewable energy sources. The renewable energy will come from a future wind farm in Clay County. It will reportedly produce 200 MW of power, which is far more than Facebook predicts it will need in the future. Facebook already has data centers scattered throughout the United States, including North Carolina, Iowa and Oregon. There is also a data center in Sweden. The Fort Worth data center will be the social website’s fifth.
