And now we’re proud to announce the mother of all sequels – Angry Birds 2!”

Rovio builds up anticipation for Angry Birds sequel launch

The game maker will also hold a promotional event in San Francisco on July 28. Although there aren’t many more details regarding the upcoming event, some speculate it may have a tie-in to the upcoming Angry Birds movie starring Jason Sudeikis and Peter Dinklage.

The company declined to name the platforms the game will be on but mentioned it will be available on app stores worldwide.

Rovio starts the countdown with official Angry Birds 2 website

Angry Birds 2 already has a website up, but it is nothing more than a countdown for the game. People who are interested in it can also sign up to receive an email when the game launches in app stores.

Angry Birds initially launched six years ago as a puzzle game requiring players to shoot birds directly into pig fortresses. The game was a huge success and spawned into a franchise of more games with action move tie-ins and spin-offs. Angry Birds also expanded into products, toys and a theme park. The upcoming game will be the first true game sequel.

According to Time’s Victor Luckerson, game maker Rovio is struggling thanks to competition from other freemium games like Candy Crush Saga. The game maker earned a total of $170 million in earnings and $11 million in operating profits last year, a decline from the prior year. As a result, the company also cut over 100 jobs last year.
