Previously, new tabs were handled by the Chrome app, but now with the new version of Android, whenever you open a new tab, a new entry is created in recent apps list. Moreover, this new method is how Chrome on Android is going to handle new tabs from now on.
Having each tab in its own slot on the menu panel can sometimes create confusion, and it’s not for everyone. Merge and unmerge tabs Chrome on Android
Step 1: First, ensure that you are running the latest version of Chrome on your Android smartphone or tablet.
Step 2: Tap on the Menu button at the top right side (the one with three dots) and then tap on Settings.
Step 3: On the Settings page, tap on “Merge tabs and apps”
Step 4: Now, toggle the switch to OFF if you want to manage tabs through the Chrome app.
If in future you change your mind, and decide you want to see the tabs in Chrome separately, then you can easily switch back.
