General Motors announced its plan to invest $1 billion at its Warren Technical Center, a National Historic Landmark site in Michigan.

“This is an investment in our people who work at the Tech Center because it is positioning the company for long-term growth by enabling new levels of innovation and collaboration into our workplace,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain at General Motors.

In addition, Reuss also said the automaker plans to transform the Warren Technical Center into a collaborative workplace of choice for its current team and future talents.

General Motors to create new jobs

According to General Motors, its investment at the Warren Technical Center would create approximately 2,600 new jobs to support the future business growth of the 59-year old complex.

The automaker will create jobs in product engineering, Information technology (IT), and all areas critical to support the future growth of its business. At present, General Motors has 19,000 employees at Warren Technical Center.

General Motors said there will be new construction at the complex and significant renovations of some of its existing facilities. The automaker would also expand some of its operations. The multiyear project will begin this month until 2018.

The automaker will construct new design studios, parking deck, multi-story IT building adjacent to the current Michigan IT Innovation Center, rebuild and renovate some existing R&D facilities as well as extensive office upgrades.

General Motors shows commitment to Michigan

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said General Motors’ investment is “great news for Warren, the region, and the state,” and it shows the company’s commitment to Michigan and its workforce. According to the governor, the automaker is providing key jobs and career opportunities for today and tomorrow. He added that they were focused on creating a competitive environment for such kind of investment in Michigan.

On the other hand, Warren Mayor Jim Fouts said the investment of General Motors means more jobs and new revenue for police and fire services. He added, “This growth has already resulted in proposals for new investments in our downtown, which is directly across the street from the Tech Center.”

General Motors previously allocated $139.5 million for the upgrades of its body shop and stamping facilities at its Warren Pre-Production Operation, which was part of the $5.4 billion investment in U.S. plants announced on April 30.
