How To Turn On WhatsApp’s Voice Calling Feature

Updated on

WhatsApp started quietly testing its long-awaited voice calling feature last month, and it’s fairly easy to activate it. The only problem is that you need to know someone who already has the voice calling feature. If you do though, it’s simple to activate it.

Download Android’s latest version

According to Abhimanyu Ghoshal of The Next Web, the first step is to make sure you have the latest version of the Android operating system, which currently is version 2.11.561, installed on your device. Next, just have another person who has the voice calling feature activated on their WhatsApp account call you.

When the call comes in, shut down the app and then open it back up. There should be a new three-column screen, with one column being for voice calls. It’s as simple as that.

Pass it on in WhatsApp

Then you’re able to call any other WhatsApp user, as long as they have the newest version of the Android operating system installed. Keep in mind that if someone doesn’t have the newest version, your call won’t go through.

At this point WhatsApp isn’t charging for voice calls, but there’s a chance that the company will in the future. If the popular messaging app does decide to start charging for calls, it’s unclear just how much that might be.
