Instagram launches Layout, a photo collage app

Updated on

Popular photo-sharing app Instagram just launched a brand new app to create collages of pictures. The app is called Layout, and it simplifies the way users share images.

The new app makes it easy to place multiple photos into one image. The Instagram app comes with custom layouts ready for use as well as a facial detection algorithm enabling the app to piece together friends easier. Instagram added on its official blog that users can drag and drop photos to rearrange the collage. Users can also pinch or zoom the sides of the photos to customize the style. The photos can also be flipped or rotated to create unique images.

Instagram takes on competition

Instagram created this new app to compete with other collage making apps including Stitch, Moldov, and Diptic. It was discovered 1 in 5 active users make use of the previously mentioned apps. The popular photo-sharing app saw a great opportunity to offer something fresh for users and keep them engaged on Instagram. This addition isn’t the first time the social photo app created a companion app. Just last fall, it released a special app called Hyperlapse to create time-lapse videos.

The Instagram app also comes with a fun photo booth feature complete with a set timer. When the pics are snapped, the photos go straight into the collage. Users also have the option to feed their collage into the Instagram proper app. Since the collage is considered one image, Instagram will accept uploaded collages.

Layout currently remains exclusive to iOS

The new Layout out is exclusive to iOS right now. The company claimed the new app will eventually roll out to Android, but there is no official date.  Facebook owns Instagram, and it is one of the most popular photo sharing apps on the market. It’s easy to use and has a huge range of users. Instagram has become a huge community of people sharing photos and video clips from their smartphones.
