Galaxy S6 U.S. Release Date Set For April 11 [REPORT]

Updated on

Samsung announced its newest flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge at the Mobile World Congress earlier this month. The devices will go on sale in 20 countries on April 10th. All the major U.S. carriers have created pre-order registration pages for both new phones. But a new report from Phone Arena claims that the Galaxy S6 and its dual-edge sibling are set to arrive in the U.S. on April 11th.

Samsung reps busy providing demos to retail outlets

Phone Arena said a source, who works with one of the top four U.S. carriers, told the website that the devices will arrive at all four major U.S. carriers on Saturday, April 11th. The source said he had learned it from a Samsung sales rep for the Greater Midwest area. Samsung representatives are currently traveling to retail outlets all over the country, providing demo and training on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The Korean electronics giant has reportedly received 20 million pre-orders for both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge from wireless carriers all over the world. Of that, five million are for the S6 Edge and 15 million for the standard Galaxy S6. Phone Arena’s source added that the curved display variant would be released in a “limited capacity.” Buoyed by the strong response, Samsung has increased the production target for its new phones.

Galaxy S6 Edge may face supply shortage

A separate report from GforGames claims that the Galaxy S6 Edge might be in short supply upon release or would be delayed altogether. The Korean electronics giant is facing 3D glass yield issues. Samsung uses its innovative 3D Thermoforming technology to create the dual-edge display. Samsung had initially planned to produce 8 to 8.5 million 3D glass units in the second quarter this year.

But due to the complex 3D Thermoforming process, Samsung’s supplier won’t be able to ship more than 6.5 million units. So, the Korean company is looking for additional suppliers. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge feature a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, 3GB RAM, Android Lollipop and octa-core Exynos processor. The devices come with 16-megapixel main camera with improved low-light performance and 5MP front-facing camera.
