Sony PlayStation 4 Users To Play Against Celebrities

Updated on

Sony PS4 fans can download a new app which will give them an opportunity to win the chance of playing against celebrities.

The app is called PlayStation HEROES, and users can enter a monthly draw in order to win a gaming session with selected celebrities, either online or in person. Sony says that for every dollar you spend in the app, you will receive one entry in the prize draw. Alternatively you can buy a bundle of 31 entries for the discounted price of $20, writes Hope King of CNN.

Launching 24 February

The first celebrity on the roster is two-time Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White, who will be playing the game Destiny against the first winner of the PlayStation HEROES contest. Next up is the chance to play against Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry, followed by Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig. The last confirmed celebrity is rapper Snoop Dogg.

The HEROES app will be free to download when it launches on February 24, but is available to pre-order as of now. The app will also allow gamers to view videos of the game play.

Sony has said that at least 90% of money received from purchases will be donated to charities including the Make-A-Wish foundation, the USO, and The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Sony’s PSN problems

As well as raising money for charity, Sony may be hoping to use the initiative as away of generating interest in its long-suffering PSN network. Users have been complaining about reliability issues after a series of high-profile outages caused by hackers, with the problem growing to the point where some users claimed that they were considering switching to rival consoles.

Celebrities and charitable donations provide two attractive reasons for users to download the new app, and Sony is presumably hoping that it can regain the goodwill of its customers. Let’s just hope that there are no more hacks or outages in the near future.
