Samsung is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy S6 at the Mobile World Congress in early March. The Korean electronics giant reportedly showcased its next flagship smartphone to select partners behind the closed doors at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. Now Digitimes has learned from sources that Samsung is planning to dump Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor in the Galaxy S6. Qualcomm’s latest and greatest processor is prone to overheating.
Galaxy S6 to feature Exynos 7420 chipset
The world’s largest smartphone maker will instead use in-house Exynos 7420 processor. Recently, the Galaxy S6 appeared on AnTuTu benchmark featuring Exynos 7420 processor and Mali-T760 graphics processor. Digitimes says that the next flagship will feature Samsung’s in-house developed 14nm processor. Other sources told the publication that the Galaxy S6 will be available in two versions, one running Qualcomm Snapdragon and another featuring Exynos processor.
Sources said that Samsung will initially manufacture 80% to 90% of Galaxy S6 units using its Exynos processor. Once Qualcomm resolves the overheating problem in Snapdragon 810, the Korean company will gradually increase the ratio of Galaxy S6 units running the latest Snapdragon. Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 will be built using TSMC’s 20nm process technology.
Galaxy S6 UI to look more like Nexus 6
Separately, a new report from Business Korea claims that Samsung will tone down the TouchWiz UI in Galaxy S6 so that the interface looks more like stock Android. Inside sources told Business Korea that the company will remove unnecessary and unpopular apps to the capacity of system memory. Samsung is also planning to strengthen core features.
Samsung users have complained that its TouchWiz UI and other bloatware eat up inbuilt storage, leaving little free storage space for users. Another report suggests that Samsung will start mass production of Galaxy S6 in February. The Galaxy S6 is expected to come in two variants: one with the standard display and another with a curved screen. The device is expected to feature a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, 3GB RAM, 20-megapixel camera and Android Lollipop.
