PS4 vs Xbox One – Who Will Win 2015 Battle?

Xbox Game Pass serviceInspiredImages / Pixabay

If 2014 was a slightly disappointing year for video games, then the next 12 months promises to be far more significant. The previous calendar year was to some extent hamstrung by a lack of new grade A titles for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with some of the most anticipated games delayed, and the best titles on the next generation systems currently being reboots of previous gen software.

However, both Sony and Microsoft will already have put carefully laid plans in place for the new year. So who is ahead in the big console battle, and who can we expect to come out on top in 2015?

PS4 vs Xbox One – The 2014 verdict

There is little doubt that 2014 was Sony’s year. Microsoft spent most of the 12 month period trying to recover from some pretty serious marketing and strategic errors. Consequently, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by around 5 million units, despite the fact that many Xbox aficionados argued that the Microsoft system actually provided the best exclusive titles.

This is a valid argument, even though Sony was able to showcase a remastered version of The Last of Us which many believe to be the best videogame ever produced. But despite the fact that Microsoft managed to improve the public perception of its console as the year unfolded, and clawed back some of the gap between the PS4 and Xbox One in sales terms, it was still lagging significantly behind Sony at the end of 2014.

PS4 vs Xbox One – Key factors

Several key factors played a part in this outcome. Probably the most important of these was that Sony did a much better job of communicating to the video gaming community what the PS4 was about. And not only did it do this, but it also opted for a games-centric emphasis which was much more pleasing to the core audience for consoles.

Microsoft no doubt still regrets the way that it initially marketed and announced the Xbox One, and it may indeed never truly recover from this in the remainder of this console generation. Sony’s decision to in fact reveal very few details about the PS4 initially has emphatically paid off, one of several decisions which have been particularly well received by gamers that has been part of an overall exemplary marketing approach.

PS4 vs Xbox One pricing

This has been underlined by Sony’s recent announcement that PS4 users will be able to play co-operatively online regardless of whether all people involved actually own the software title. This contrasts starkly with Microsoft’s original policy of effectively forcing gamers to purchase a license for any individual piece of software.

While this is probably something that the games industry would still like to enforce on people – and Sony should not be perceived as some lillywhite keeper of the faith, as it is almost certain that it would have implemented a similar system to Microsoft had it been deemed acceptable by the gamer community – the economic model that Sony has intrinsically associated its console with has certainly paid off than both in terms of public perception and sales.

PS4 vs Xbox one – Microsoft made mistake

Additionally, the PlayStation 4 is simply a better console than the Xbox One. It is more powerful, and no-one, even Microsoft itself, can reasonably argue otherwise. For Microsoft to have charged more for what is a less powerful console when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were initially released looks, at best, rather naive, and at worst commercially suicidal.

PS4 vs Xbox One – Proactive Microsoft

However, Microsoft has made some good moves to improve the perception of the console. Ensuring that new purchases of the device were no longer forced to use Kinect was a step in the right direction. And pricing is now far more reasonable, while the list of games available for the console has been arguably more impressive than the PS4 portfolio. The Xbox One probably has the better exclusive titles, and additionally Forza is by far the best driving game on either system; quite a significant factor given the rich history of racing video games.

PS4 vs Xbox One – 2015 exclusives

However, it is arguable that this trend will reverse in 2015. The next 12 months will be a period when the two consoles really bed in, with large numbers of releases coming online for both the Sony and Microsoft devices. But the line-up of exclusive titles for the PS4 for looks a little bit more impressive at this point in time.

PS4 vs Xbox One – a look at games

One of the big jewels in the Sony crown is the Naughty Dog development studio, who already delivered arguably the best game on the PS4 in 2014 with the aforementioned The Last of Us. 2015 will see Naughty Dog unveil the latest in the Uncharted series, and this release definitely has the potential to be a game of the year.

The Order: 1886 is another highly anticipated title for the PlayStation 4 which has really impressed in previews, while Bloodborne and Until Dawn both look like truly worthy AAA titles as well. Sony’s machine will also benefit from two blast from the past titles in 2015, with Ratchet and Clank making a reappearance on the next-generation console, alongside Street Fighter V.

Xbox users will benefit from a new Halo game, while Quantum Break and Crackdown also look promising. But it is telling that BGR’s list of the five most anticipated Xbox One exclusives for 2015 includes Rise of the Tomb Raider; a game that will also appear on the PlayStation 4 at a later date and which isn’t truly exclusive.

PS4 vs Xbox One – Analysts’ verdict

With this in mind, it looks as if 2015 could be another great year for Sony. Although Microsoft has cut the price of the Xbox One aggressively, Sony has a more powerful and gamer-friendly machine, a lot of good will built up from previous activity and policies, and the better list of exclusive titles for 2015, at least according to common consensus.

PS4 vs Xbox one – Wedbush

It is not surprising than that video game analysts believes Sony will be the winner in 2015. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes that Sony’s first party software will be a huge factor, and that Microsoft will be forced to further cut the price of the Xbox One in an attempt to keep up. The proof will be in the pudding, and Microsoft still has a large following in the United States. But at the moment it appears that Sony remains in pole position.

  1. The first month of 2015 saw the PlayStation 4 as the No. 1 selling console in the U.S. PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console in January, it and remains the cumulative leader in the U.S., according to NPD data..

  2. I’m not going to argue the data back and forth you. I’ve been a sales analyst consumer, and paying npd member long enough to have a grasp on where things stand sales wise.

You are correct in the fact that the PS4 has sold more units than the XB1 so far. Nobody is trying to argue that.

MS released rough sales numbers back in November after the npd report went public. There is no way for Sony to know this soon after the holiday shopping season as to how many units actually went through to customers. This is just a sold in number, and not sold through.

Sold in vs sold through is largely irrelevant in this case, because stock is still relatively short this time of year following xmas. Sold in vs sold through only largely matter on something like the Ouya, where units out there sitting on shelves might never sell through to the consumer.

Either way, I’m done here. I know the sales number, along with everybody else that keeps up with it. I own both consoles, and own stock in neither, so it doesn’t matter to me which one sells more. (Which was mentioned in my first post.) If you need sales figures to make yourself feel better about your console of choice, then that’s on you. If you need to downplay the success of the competing console in order to feel better, then have at it. For someone with such little experience in sales, you put way too much stock into it.

  3. Shipped vs sold is largely irrelevant = false, Sold or shipped to consumers is different than shipped to retailers.

The news stated ?”PlayStation 4 has SOLD 18.5m units worldwide as of 4th January 2015, Sony has announced”? See the SOLD and not shipped.

Also the 13.5 million stated this ?”Sony shipped through 13.5 million PS4 consoles to CONSUMERS by the end of October”? See the CONSUMERS and not retail.

XBL was not ( officially ) at 10 million ( sold to consumers ) as MS haven’t released Official figures since the ( 5.1 million figure ).

But what we all know is that PS4 is the best selling console of 2014.

  4. Your numbers are so bad, I shouldn’t even respond but….

Shipped vs sold is largely irrelevant, especially this soon after Xmas as retail stock is relatively low.

Sony’s statement yesterday didn’t specify sold through to consumers, and when asked to clarify, didn’t AFAIK. Sony’s last sold number of 13.5 million turned out to be shipped rather than sold btw, but I digress.

Npd, and WW sales data has them at about this.

    PS4- 18.5 million units sold.

XB1- Around 11-12 million units sold.

MS isn’t exact, as they haven’t released numbers yet, but the XB1 was at 10 million back in Nov. They’ve probably sold at least a couple million since then, so 13 million isn’t out of the question.

  5. “””Sony just released its latest set of hard numbers for sales of the PS4, and those looking for signs of a slowdown won’t find it here. After reporting 10 million consoles sold to consumers in August 2014,
Sony’s new figures have them selling 18.5 million PS4s. And yes, that’s still sold to consumers, not shipped to retailers…

Microsoft said 5.1 million Xbox Ones had been sold, not just shipped. And since we shouldn’t leave it out, Nintendo’s Wii U, with its year-long head start, that console has sold just under 7.5 million units to consumers by last count.””

So it looks like Xbone is still in last place…

    PS4 has sold 18.5 Million
Wii U has sold 7.5 Million
Xbox1 has sold 5.1 Million ( Needs new official MS figures )

  6. Wii u only has 96 games . that poor and half of them have ps1 /ps2 graphics . wii is only a toy.

  7. As far as the first point goes… I’m really not all that concerned with WW sales. I only really pay attention to sales figures in English speaking countries, as I would like to be able to understand people in game chat. Microsoft apparently isn’t too concerned with those countries either, as they really don’t market the X1 in those countries either.

The second point of yours only strengthens mine… Almost all the games that you listed are poor quality indie junk from part time devs that can’t find work at a decent studio. Crap like that has been all over the xbox360 marketplace for years. The difference? You don’t hear xbox fans bragging about it.

  8. It’s been shown that Xbone still hasn’t picked up in the sales department when compared to PS4s Worldwide sales ( including November / December 2014 WW-Sales ). Microsoft has been playing catch-up ever since PS4 got released.

  9. XB1 outsold the PS4 during November by almost half a million units. Retail feedback so far, points to that happening again in December.

As far as big titled games go so far this gen…

    PS4-
TLOU remastered. (An updated PS3 title)
    Driveclub.
    Infamous SS.
    LBP 3.
    Killzone.

    XB1-
    Ryse Son of Rome.
    Forza 5
    Titanfall
    Project Spark
    Dead Rising
    Killer Instinct
    Forza Horizon 2
    Sunset Overdrive
Halo MCC (Several remade titles bundled)

I’m sure I missed a couple of PS4 titles, but it isn’t even close. XB1 killed PS4 when it comes to AAA games.

  10. I have PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One (and gaming PC). I by far love my PS4 the most out of all of them, it’s simply the best. And I’m a fan girl of no brand, I just like PS4 best.

  11. Reggiebuttsmash | Jan 3, 2015, 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm |

We all know wii u won 2014. Xbox and Playstation currently have the worst library of games. They will get better but wii u is currently dominating. Not by sales but with an awesome set of games

  12. Damage Control Alert

  13. You are flat out wrong | Jan 3, 2015, 1:36 am at 1:36 am |

    corvusmd doing his shilling again.

No games in the first eight months. Time to stop living in denial.

  14. Quite few Indies on that list I thought the Xbox One was to precious for Indies, IndieBox One Lmao. I own a Xbox One but hate that some of their so call true exclusives will hit PC/Mac and even XB360. It’s like why buy it on Xbox when there on PC/Mac, unlike the PlayStation platform no Playstation console no playing their exclusives. But I’ll be enjoying exclusives on both consoles bro.

  15. It does and I own both but let’s be for real PS4’s up coming exclusives are better at the moment than the Xbox One’s exclusives.

  16. Jake Lesperance | Jan 2, 2015, 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm |

Comming from what. Neither line up for 2014 was amazing. The games that I played I loved but to far inbetween. But the games I did play I loved just wish there was more of them. And if you look further down the list I presented every one of the games comming out for 2015 for ps4.

Now you’ll say well they don’t count there console exclusives some are on PC to.

But when it comes to cross platforming then it dosnt matter because ps4 is doing that and xbot is not.

    As of now

  17. Subjective, as always.

  18. More fanboys that never played the game.
Enjoy the broken “Forza Killer”. LOL

  19. More indies on or coming to PC? Yep.

  20. And the fanboy speaks. PS fanboys sucked Sony like a vacuum when they were all TVTVTV at E3. People still pay for PSN even though its crap.

Sony fanboys are hypocrites and send people death threats.

  21. No facts presented and an insult.

    PS fanboys in a nutshell.

  22. Halo doesn’t excite anyone?
Man, dude, you are EXTREMELY biased.

  23. Subjective again, little fanboy. I guess you’re jealous.

  24. Look who’s talking. SFV is a huge exclusive? Why exactly? Mortal Kombat X is coming.

And did you play Sunset? Looks like you didn’t.

More damage control from a silly little screaming 8 year old.

  25. As well as Grim Fandango.

  26. Subjective, as always.

  27. Games, moron. Sales=/=quality.
    Xbox games slaughtered PS4’s.

  28. You’re a prime example of why Sony has the worst community.

  29. I own both a XB1 and a PS4, I own most of the key games (do not own watch dogs or ac4) The majority of my gaming takes place on a computer format, and i find myself enriched in all the mmos on the market. However I can honestly say that my PS4 is collecting a massive amount of dust. I love first person shooters so I wouldnt dare play anything on the playstation related to that (had bf4 for playstation and the community sucked, got it for x1 for 20 dollars after and noticed that competitiveness is greater) The last of us was great as I didnt own a ps3 to play it before the remastered version, but other than that there is no point to my playstation. I saw someone post all the exclusives for both systems and i cant even tell you what literally 45 of them are (Indie I assume). Xbox exclusives do look a tad weak this year admittedly, but I would have sold my ps4 long ago if it wasnt for Bloodborne and the order. Everything else looks uninteresting to me. (Note that I do not like to waste money on single player games, but would rather like to play competitively with others).

  30. Justyou on the first paragraph I try to express what I think about the passion the people put on the comments. The second is just my opinion, on which I believe (personal opinion) is the best pick.

  31. I think you made a mistake : You start out expressing that some things are subjective and you seem to want to make some objective measurements, but then you make the same subjective mistakes…

The hardware is perhaps stronger on the PS4 side. I say “Perhaps” simply because hardware is much more subjective than you might think. You can’t just compare numbers – you have to look at how those specs are being used.

And then you continue on to say “Sony had and have the best portfolio of AAA exclusive studios working for them” – a very much subjective statement. “Best” is never a word to include if you are trying to be objective in any way…

  32. Lol you probably don’t have a ps4. You have an Xbox you piece of sh$t.

  33. Why does MS breed a whole new level of retardedness?

  34. Killer List

  35. MS could sell their brainwashed masses a turd in a box and they will buy it….nevermind they already did.

  36. Nothing on this list excites the masses. Bloodborne, The Order, SFV, UC4 ALONE are better than this entire list.

  37. Lol who said they were 720p? Stop with the xbot lies. This isn’t the Xbone were talking about…besides Bloodborne is by FROM software…you know the makers or Demon/Dark Souls so this will be a huge seller for the Souls fan base. SFV is a HUGE exclusive for Sony…not timed either. No Mans Sky cant be any more overhyped than Sunset Overdrive. You have played exactly ZERO of these games so stop with the lies, assumptions etc. Its just more damage control from a sad little xbot.

  38. Every time there’s a comparison it affects the feelings of the buyers, if you have a PS4 for you that’s the best one, but if instead you have a XBOX1 that will be the best one. But the truth is that there are two parameters assess to make a fair comparison; the hardware, the software. So if we take a look one by one.
On the hardware aspect; is clear that the PS4 has a better system architectural design and is a more powerful console than the XBOX1, also PS4 is investing in the VR which it might end being a big Flop but who knows.
Software: Sony had and have the best portfolio of AAA exclusive studios working for them, so the 2015 look really promising, 2014 was a bad year for both consoles, too few worthy new games. If you can afford to have both go for it, but if not just love whatever the one you have.

  39. is ps4 online gaming back up?

  40. We now dude but dont spoil it for us because you feeling Shity gtfo here

  41. Wtf they mean 2014 wasn’t a ps4 year? This guy needs to stay off drugs… Sony slaughter last year it was Microsoft Xbox one that all most died sony had them switching how the console play one minute its online only then its not talk about that they basically copied… Sony came over in beat Microsoft in own back yard back yard…

  42. Jake Lesperance | Jan 2, 2015, 7:15 am at 7:15 am |

Wow. Pretty impressive how upset you are by all of this lol. It’s cool man your into COD and halo there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m into new ips and a bigger variety of innovation. It’s cool man.

Oh and by the way the list I put out are all games comming out next year, and that is 47 ps4 exclusives. There is 11 for xbox one. That’s still more then enough for a year, plus multiplats.

And the list you out out there are 5 to 7 there that are not comming next year lol. Or even mentioned in any other way besides someone saying hope there’s a new gears game lol.

It’s cool man just relax bro go get your lift on and touch a vagina. Haha. Let’s be honest you’ve never touched one of those.

  43. he must be the new #1 troll.
    also
    #1 delusional
    #1 desperate
    #1 stupid
    #1 dumb kid
    #1 fanboy
    #1 liar
    etc etc

he tries hard to bash the ps4, but when one start reading his comment “… bloodborne and the order 1886 run at 720p…” , we start laughing during 3 hours.

  44. So wrong so I’ll just place this here..♦♦Showing that PS4 has way more games than Xbone♦♦.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV9E0uMco7Q

  45. PS4 is outselling Xbone and pricing hasn’t really got anything to do with it ( past console sales proved what I’m stating when PS3 outsold 360 even when set at a higher price and a year later release date ) So Microsoft dropped Xbone in price to match PS4’s pricing, yet it’s been shown that Xbone still hasn’t picked up in the sales department when compared to PS4s Worldwide sales.

Microsoft has been playing catch-up ever since PS4 got released. So in the here and now ( present ) PS4 is the peoples gaming choice as not only has it got more games than Xbone ( although both have games coming soon ) a study has shown that PS4 games also got rated higher when compared to Xbone games.

Most highest rated games = PS4
    Most worldwide sales = ps4
    Most USA sales = PS4
    Most UK sales = PS4
Most third party sales = PS4
Most supported console by developers = PS4

Will Xbone outsell 360? ( time can only tell ) will PS4 stay ahead of other consoles ( time can only tell ) that’s all about the future, BUT in the present right now Xbone is not the most wanted console. It is the PS4 that’s the most wanted current gen console. That’s clearly seen by sales of nearly 2.1 ( in favour of PS4 ) as well as public voicing in articles, ect.

  46. fredddddddyyyy | Jan 2, 2015, 6:18 am at 6:18 am |

    nar stop crying mate ;)

xbox always jump on ps blog’s bching.dont dish it out if you cant take it

  47. You realize that Bloodborne and the order are 1080p and the 5 games you listed as “coming to Xbox One” are not, in fact, announced as coming to xbox one, right?

  48. Inanimate products can have objective winners and losers in a given year, seeing as how they are evolving with new features and software to enjoy. A toy doesn’t change, it’s the same product to everyone – not so with game consoles.

  49. It’s pretty obvious that PS4’s lineup beats the ever loving shit out of the Xbox Lineup. Theres no contest.

  50. also, huevon, calla te y mata te. eres una vergüenza para la comunidad hispano-americana.come se puede ser tonto asi…

  51. it’s because of faithful delusional desperate fanboys like you, that microsoft just spent 2 billions on minecraft, instead of spending that cash on hundreds of fantastic games.
because of idiots like you (where is bloodborne and the order 1886 720p online, stupid animal?? stop spreading fud), that accept everything that the master microsoft serves them, because of you, that mai 2014, they announced a console that looked more like a nsa device with some game capabilities than a console.
because of you, always accepting what the master says and does, last gen, since 2010, xbox gamers only got the same call of duty exclusive content, gears of war, halo and forza. almost no new games.
from your list on xbox, all the released titles barely sold new consoles. even killter instinct or sunset overdrive, made with simple textures, colors, gradients, and no real life textures, even those games, could only run at 720 and 900p.

when i read your first comment about the ps4 and then, your list, i feel like punching my monitor with anger: one can’t be more stupid than you. dear Lord, no, it’s not possible. i wonder if you are older than 16-17yo.
dear lord, what an idiot. really. do you read your BS before clicking on “post” ?
you are another pitiful desperate kid, who is forced to play his exclusive games at 720p or 900p, on his xbox one, and is forced to play the much inferior version of 99% of the multiplatform games, where, whether by running at twice the framerate, or 1080p vs 900 or 720p, the ps4 is using the power of 2-2.25 xbox one consoles. just that. 2 xbox one.

so yeah, kid, keep on spreading shiit like you just did, microsoft is going to sell another 10 million consoles, thanks to your comment. facebook and google CEO: watch out, a new genius is born, he is smarter than 10 einsteins.

poor kid, really. at the end, i almost feel sorry and bad, for you. you keep on telling yourself all these things, and repeat inside your head that the esram will double its speed thanks to the new sdk, and in a few months, directx12 will make the xbox one 5 times more powerful. yeah, keep on doing it, it’s gonna happen, for sure.

ok, now, grab your books, and go back to school. today, you are going to do some maths. you will learn that almost 20 millions ps4 consoles being played at home IS MORE than 8-9 million SENT TO RETAILERS xbox one.
that is going to be a great lesson.if only you are smart enough to count until 20 millions.

  52. You’re so sad and desperate

  53. GRIBBLE GRUNGER | Jan 2, 2015, 4:06 am at 4:06 am |

Stupid titles as always, both PS4 and XBO are toys, not living creatures. So toys cannot win/lose. Even the most powerful toys can be killed easily by a human/creature.

  54. fredddddddyyyy | Jan 2, 2015, 3:22 am at 3:22 am |

nar there not .ps4 list is double that . they stil cant get the last HALO right ! haha. Sunset Overdrive rubish.

    Forza Horizon 2 defeated.

  55. fredddddddyyyy | Jan 2, 2015, 3:11 am at 3:11 am |

this to help xbone fans forget who won 2014 y1 ;)

  56. Well 2015 promises to be packed for ALL gamers….so ultimately gamers win. However, for me and my money, I know without a shadow of a doubt X1 will be doing all my heavy lifting again this year, then Wii U, then PS4. That’s just me. As it stands right now for me, UC4 is the only MUST HAVE title on PS4…and with how packed this year will be, other stuff that I might have tried in a less busy year will just get pushed to the side unfortunately. With most games now having an online component I do all my multiplats on X1.

  57. alfonso Gutierrez | Jan 2, 2015, 12:27 am at 12:27 am |

Bloodborne and the order of 1886 will disappoint many people. They are only 720p/30fps and very repetitive slash and hack rpg bullshit. MLS who cares! Baseball is a boring old sport and declining in the U.S.A., Mexico, and Canada. Yakuza, Godzilla, Tear away are going to be for PS3. Street Fighter franchise aren’t good anymore anime 3D bullshit. No Man’s Sky overhyped, it’s not a real game at all just a worthless simulation. The list of Phony Samestation.

Xbox One exclusive are way better. Those PS4 game list are cross-platforms. Yakuza and Godzilla also on PS3.

  59. It’s only a year in. Give it time the exclusives are coming

Well I did mine and there’s the list. Where is yours if the xbox one has such a better lineup.

I don’t hate xbox it’s just not for me. The types of the games that come up are more fps.

But then you get ppl like you who just come on and throw sh$t out there about all these supposed facts lol.

We’ll show me some facts or shut the f#ck up.

  62. Wow glad I got a PS4 instead of xbox one

  63. whoever wrote this did not do their homework the Xbox has way better exclusive games coming out its just a fact. i have a PS4 and I’m very upset with it and wish i went with the xbox one for that alone.
