Japanese tech company Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758) plans to unveil clip-on smart classes at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show. The attachable Single-Lens Display Module was designed to compete with Google Glass. It features a control board, optical unit, and OLED microdisplay. This device will instantly transform your pair of sunglasses into something like Google-Glass.
Sony plans to launch Google Glass alternative
Sony summed it up in a press release, “This display module possesses the potential to enrich users’ lives in a variety of ways. By simply attaching it to a pair of fashionable glasses, goggles, sunglasses, or other type of eyewear, you can instantly gain access to visual information that adds a level of convenience to your everyday life.”
Sony hopes to tap developers to create apps for work and sports. The company will also give software development kits to developers ranging from electronic manufacturers to eyewear makers. Sony added, “Sony therefore aims to promote development of novel uses for glasses-style smart devices … such as with applications that access data in the cloud or that link with infrastructure systems. It was made possible by Sony’s unique OLED and semiconductor silicon drive technologies. It is also capable of reproducing deep blacks with contrast ratio higher than 10,000:1 and covering 100 percent of the sRGB color space, thereby displaying images with rich, vibrant color. ”
Developer involvement
Developers are also encouraged to load apps onto the module to enable independent use of the device. They could also create smartphone apps which sync the gadget over Wi-Fi. The Japanese tech company also plans to display the module’s communication specifications enabling developers to pair it up with other devices wirelessly. Specifications for the device include 0.23-inch high resolution color OLED micro-display with 640-by-400 pixel resolution. According to Sony, this is one of the smallest things in the world.
