Netflix And Amazon Gain Ground With Golden Globe Nominations

Updated on

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has received seven Golden Globe nominations for its shows compared to Amazon’s two nominations for the recent show Transparent. Both the companies are breaking the old rules when it comes to TV series, as well as providing tough competition to traditional media with their shows such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Transparent and so forth.

Nothing new for Netflix

Both companies received nominations in the Best TV series, Musical or Comedy where Transparent and Orange is the New Black are up against Silicon Valley, Jane and Virgin and Girls.

Just last year, Netflix flexed its muscles when Robin Wright bagged a Golden Globe for her performance in the House of Cards.

Recently, the online streaming company grabbed five nominations for the SAG awards, three nominations for the WGA awards, three nominations for the PGA awards and eight NAACP Image Award nominations. Virunga from the house of Netflix was awarded the best documentary in the Film Independent Spirits Awards. Netflix received one nomination for the Outstanding Producer of a Documentary Theatrical for the PGA awards, along with the three nominations for the Cinema Eye Honors, including Outstanding Nonfiction Feature.

Exhaustive content pipeline

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, said in a statement that the company is honored to receive seven Golden Globe nominations. Sarandos said that shows like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and all the storytellers have blazed a trail for TV in the new millennium, and the company is honored to see their creative accomplishments awarded this week. “I couldn’t be prouder to see Taylor, Uzo, Robin, Ricky, and Kevin rewarded for their fearless work,” Sarandos said.

Over the long-run, the online streaming service has entered into partnership with some big film studios and production houses such as CBS Corp, Sony Pictures, The Weinstein Company and the Walt Disney, which will help the company to continue to grow the shows in its library.

Subscriber growth will also be fueled by the tremendous product pipeline of the company. Besides Marco Polo, there are five new original series based on Marvel superhero character including Daredevil launching next May. Apart from these, other original content in the making from Netflix include science-fiction tale Sense 8, which is from the maker of the Matrix, and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin starring in Grace and Frankie.
