Telltale Games entered a partnership with Mojang to create a narrative-driven game called Minecraft: Story Mode, which features an original story driven by player choice.

A separate stand-alone product

Telltale games emphasized that the new feature “will not be an add-on for Minecraft, but rather a separate stand-alone product.  In addition, Telltale Games said the “game series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original experience”

Telltell Games is the publisher of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Tales from the Borderlands among others. The company plans to release Minecraft: Story Mode episodically on 2015. It will be available on consoles, computers and mobile devices next year.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be a cool game

On the other hand, game developer and publisher, Mojang said, “We’re not intending on creating an official story for Steve or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail. It will be a cool game.”

Mojang’s statement shows that it recognizes the importance of freedom and openness of Minecraft, which attracted millions of users. It has around 55 million users based on the latest reported figures.

Microsoft Corporation acquired Mojang for $2.5 billion last September. Commenting on the acquisition, CEO Staya Nadella previously said, “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise. It is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”

Minecraft is very popular in the gaming community with more than 100 million downloads. It is the second most popular paid app on iPhone. The game is also available on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It is the third-best selling title in the United States last August.
