iPhone 6: How Much Of An Upgrade From The iPhone 5S?

Updated on

The iPhone 6 has been out for a few months now, and Apple fans have been happily buying them up. But for those who didn’t immediately feel the need to run out and buy one, is it really worth upgrading? Especially for those who have last year’s iPhone 5S?

Load the Game compared the iPhone 6 with the iPhone 5S to see if it’s really worth it to upgrade.

The obvious differences between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S

Of course the most obvious difference between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5S is the size of the display. For those who really want the bigger 4.7-inch display, it may be worthwhile to upgrade. The display has a resolution of 750 x 1334 and a pixel density of 326. The iPhone 5S, on the other hand, has a 4-inch display with a resolution of 640 x 1136 and a pixel density that’s the same as that of the iPhone 6.

These numbers essentially mean that the quality of the display is about the same on both phones because the slightly higher resolution on the iPhone 6 is enough to account for the bigger display size. That makes the quality of the images on the display comparable with that of the iPhone 5S. Hence, the only difference is really the size of the display.

Apple also went with shatter-proof glass on the iPhone 6, which is supposedly more durable than the Gorilla Glass on the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 6 also sports rounded edges, another difference from the iPhone 5S.

And of course there’s the price. Buying a new iPhone 5S right now will cost $550 for the 16 GB model or $600 for the 64 GB model. The iPhone 6 is more expensive, coming in at $650 for the 16 GB version, $750 for the 64 GB version and $850 for the 128 GB version.

The not so obvious differences

Under the hood, the iPhone 6 sports Apple’s newest chip, the A8, which is 64-bit just like the A7 chip in the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 6 also has a 1.4 GHz processor, compared to the 1.3 GHz processor in the iPhone 5S, and still has just 1 GB of RAM. The cameras are the same, at 8 megapixels and 1.2 megapixels.

The battery on the iPhone 6 is also bigger, at 1,810 mAh, compared to the 1,560 mAh battery in the iPhone 5S. There’s also more storage available on the iPhone 6, at 128 GB, which is not an option in the iPhone 5S. And of course the software is the same on both phones because they both use the latest version of iOS.
