Last week, SamMobile reported that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s forthcoming Galaxy S phone will be called Galaxy S6. The Korean electronics giant has already been working on its new flagship phone under the code name “Project Zero.” Now, Korean publication Naver has learned from inside sources that Samsung is developing a faster 4G LTE chip of its own. The LTE chip will be used in one variant of the Galaxy S6.
Samsung developing a tri-band LTE Cat.10 modem
The report claims that Samsung is working on a tri-band LTE Cat. 10 modems for its Exynos processor. This chip will support theoretical data speeds of up to 450mbps. By comparison, the current LTE Cat. 6 standard has a maximum speed of 300mbps. The South Korean electronics heavyweight seems to be interested in designing its own chips rather than relying on third-party chipmakers.
According to BGR, Qualcomm also has a similar modem. But that’s likely to be used in another variant of the Galaxy S6. Note that Samsung usually launches two variants of its flagship smartphones. One sports Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and is sold mostly in the U.S. and other western markets. Another model is equipped with Samsung’s Exynos processor.
Galaxy S6 with faster LTE to get a limited release
Faster LTE modems can be used to their full potential only if telecom carriers support faster data transfers. Korean carrier LG U+ is also working on tri-band LTE modem that supports speeds of 450mbps. So, chances are Samsung’s Galaxy S6 with faster LTE chip will get limited initial release. Earlier this year, Samsung launched Galaxy S5 LTE-A version, which supports higher data transfer speeds, only in South Korea.
A few days ago, the Galaxy S6 appeared on AnTuTu benchmark. Apparently, the phone will be equipped with a 5.5-inch QHD display, 20MP main camera, 5-megapixel front snapper, 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The S6 is likely to run 64-bit Exynos 7420 processor, though another model could sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip. The Galaxy S6 will most likely get the Android 5.0 Lollipop. Other reports suggest that Samsung will also launch an Edge variant of the Galaxy S6 with a curved display.
