Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) cares about education, which is why the company’s chief executive officer Tim Cook recently donated $291K to a school district in Steel Valley, Pennsylvania. School administrators voted to use the money for iPads which will be rolled out in the 2015-2016 school year.
Apple donates money to school district as a gift
Cook made the announcement he would donate money to the Steel Valley School District in September, but the offer wasn’t accepted until this week. During a school board meeting, Cook arrived to honor philanthropist William Campbell, who retired from the Apple board in July. Cook offered Campbell the large sum for the school district.
Apple has always been about philanthropic projects. The iPhone maker often spends time and money helping causes that are important to all. The company recently teamed up with Product RED again this year as a way to contribute to the fight against AIDS. Cook explained in a statement, “Apple is a proud supporter of (RED) because we believe the gift of life is the most important gift anyone can give. For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact. This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple’s retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well.”
Apple’s history of giving
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) co-founder Steve Jobs was a big believer in giving money to charitable causes although much of this donations were given in secret. Over a year ago, it was discovered the late Jobs and his wife Laurene Powell Jobs gave a ton of money to philanthropic causes. He even gave $50 million of his own money to AIDS research and local hospitals. Powell Jobs added they like to give but don’t attach names to donations.
