UnitedHealth Group Revamps Senior Management Team

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH), the largest health insurer in the United States announced the changes in its senior management team today.

The health insurer said the revamp is part of effort to continue its progress to become a market-leader leader in providing quality clinical care and service delivery with the most advanced data, technology and applied analytical capabilities.

Stephen J. Hemsley, CEO of UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) said its next generation of leaders will work together over the next five years to continue to diversify the company’s offerings, advance its technology and data services and elevate its service levels.

He added that the new senior management team will be responsible in deepening its collaboration with care providers, customers and governments.

UnitedHealth Group created Office of the Chief Executive

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) created a new Office of the Chief Executive, which is composed of its CEO Hemsley, Vice Chairman Larry Renfro and President David Wichmann.

The Office of the Executive was created following the resignation of Gail Boudreaux from her position as executive vice president of UnitedHealth Group and CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

Boudreaux decided to leave after achieving the growth and performance goals that were set when she joined the health insurer in 2008.

Leadership changes

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) said Wichmann will transition from CFO to president over the next 12 to 18 months. He will be responsible in overseeing all of the domestic and international businesses of UnitedHealthcare and the overall performance of the UnitedHealth Group.

Renfrom has been appointed vice chairman. He will also continue to serve as CEO of Optum. In addition, he will assume oversight responsibilities for all enterprise strategic relationships, key client relationships and company-wide business growth efforts.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) appointed Dirk McMahon as chief operating officer of Optum and CEO of Optum Rx. He was also name executive vice president of enterprise operations of UnitedHealth Group.

According to Hemley, UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) added $36 billion in revenues and serving 14 million more people since its last organizational changes. The company also added 75,000 employees since then.

“Having generated this strong growth, and in anticipation of further growth in an evolving health care marketplace, UnitedHealth Group is again adapting our organization and drawing on and diversifying our deep leadership team to position us most effectively to make meaningful contributions in health care for years to come,” said Hemsley.
