iPhone 6 Plus vs. iPhone 6: What's The Difference?

Updated on

Although the iPhone 6 Plus may simply appear to be a larger version of the iPhone 6, the results of Detwiler’s investigation  show that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has in fact made some subtle changes to the internal hardware. He claims that the two new models are easier to open than their predecessors, because Apple has moved the Home button cable which means you no longer have to worry about tearing it upon opening the device.

iPhone 6 Plus vs iPhone 6: Observations

Detwiler states that the overall layout of the internal hardware is the same on the two models, with the speaker and Lightning connector at the bottom, battery on the left, motherboard on the right and the camera at the top. Elements attached to the front panel include the display, front camera, sensors, earpiece speaker and the Home button. Apple has also added a metal plate which is placed behind the screen.

The first variation is a different system board than the one in the standard iPhone, but Detwiler bemoans the fact that the metal shields covering the chips are soldered in place, preventing easy modifications. He also spotted that the vibration mechanism in the iPhone 6 Plus is different, and sits in a different place than that of the iPhone 6, while the external speakers are different too.

Given the greater size of the handset, it is understandable that Apple has included a 11.1 Watt/hour battery in the Plus, compared to the 6.91 Watt/hour unit employed in the standard model.

Further changes in the future?

Detwiler claims that these are “really interesting and important design changes,” which most users would not be aware of.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will strengthen the iPhone 6 Plus, after some users reported that their handsets were susceptible to bending. According to the latest reports, no action has yet been taken to prevent the deformation of the device. Some users are hoping for modifications, and one Apple fan, who calls himself doctorkuddles, even took to listening to two iPhone 6 Plus in order to investigate if the company had added any new components.
