While we here at Value Walk do not usually dip our toes into the world of celebrity gossip, upheaval in the cast of the new Steve Jobs biopic is techy enough to warrant a piece.
The film is to be directed by Danny Boyle, and Bale has come to the decision after “much deliberation and conflicting feelings” that he is “not right for the part.”
Christian Bale to play co-founder of Apple: Uncertain casting
The news comes just one month after Aaron Sorkin, the writer of the film, stated that Christian Bale would star as the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) co-founder in the movie because he was seen to be the “best actor on the board in a certain age range.”
According to a Variety report, Christian Bale was supposed to play the role since mid-October, with filming planned to start in the spring of next year.
Bale’s departure represents the latest in a string of changes of those involved in the film.
In April it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio would be playing the lead role in the Jobs biopic, but last month he reportedly dropped out of the same role.
The directors’ influence
Originally the film was supposedly going to be directed by David Fincher, but Sony, who are backing the film, rejected him and he was replaced by Danny Boyle. Bale’s departure may be linked to the fact that he was apparently the lead man of choice for Fincher.
The role of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is expected to be played by Seth Rogen.
A previous Jobs biopic starred Ashton Kutcher and took a completely different format. The upcoming version will portray three half-hour scenes before unveiling the Mac, NeXT, and iPod, according to writer Sorkin.
I wouldn’t dare speculate as to who might be considered for the role of Jobs now that two of the most well-known male leads of recent years have turned it down, but it would appear that Bale fell victim to the change of direction instigated by the replacement of Fincher with Boyle.
