iOS 8.0.1 Update Pulled By Apple Inc. Due To Touch ID, Cell Issues

Apple pulls iOS 8.0.1 immediately

iPhone 6 or 6 Plus users who installed iOS 8.0.1 were greeted to a host of problems immediately after installing it. Many said that cell service on their iPhone was disrupted, with the device showing “no service” even when they were in their mobile carrier’s coverage area. Users reported that their Touch ID fingerprint sensor stopped working as well.

According to The Verge, switching to airplane mode or rebooting the phone didn’t fix the issue. Mac Rumors reports that it appears as if users of the brand new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were the only iDevice users who reported these problems. The issues appear to stretch across all the major mobile carriers in the U.S., as well as some carriers in Canada, the U.K. and Germany.

John Paczkowski of Re/code tweeted that an Apple spokesperson said they have already pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update.

What iOS 8.0.1 was supposed to fix

The release notes provided by Apple about iOS 8.0.1 indicated that the new version was supposed to fix a problem that was affecting HealthKit apps, as well as third-party keyboard issues. Other bugs that were supposed to be corrected were an issue with some apps being able to access the photo library, problems with the new Reachability feature and a problem that sometimes caused extra data usage when a text message was received.

Apple also said it was adding better support for its “Ask to Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases,” correcting a problem with restoring ringtones from iCloud backups and a bug with Safari that kept users from uploading videos and photos.

Fixing iPhone 6 after iOS 8.0.1

Users should just connect their iPhone to iTunes to back up their data. Then hit the “Restore iPhone” button and follow the instructions that are provided on the screen. This is the same fix Apple Support is recommending to iPhone 6 or 6 Plus owners as well.
