Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s Galaxy Note Edge with cutting-edge display technology will be a “limited edition concept.” That means it will be a niche product, just like last year’s Galaxy Round. However, Samsung plans to launch Galaxy Note Edge in many countries, unlike Galaxy Round that was launched only in South Korea.
Galaxy Note Edge to ship in small numbers
Samsung launched Galaxy Note Edge alongside Galaxy Note 4 at a pre-IFA event on September 3. The Korean electronics announced a few days ago that it would start selling Note 4 in South Korea and China this week. The device will reach 140 countries by the end of October. Note 4’s U.S. launch is scheduled for October 17. But those looking to buy Galaxy Note Edge will have to wait a bit longer.
During an interview with ZDNet Korea, DJ Lee, president of IT & mobile communications division at Samsung Mobile, said that Note Edge is a “technology intensive” phone and it will be a “limited edition concept.” Lee added that the device will ship only in small numbers, and there will be different release dates for different countries.
Galaxy Note Edge a successor to Galaxy Round?
Galaxy Note Edge will hit the South Korean markets “before November.” Samsung forecasts to sell only one million units of Note Edge in 2014. By comparison, the Korean company expects Galaxy Note 4 to sell at least 15 million units in the first month of its launch. So, Galaxy Note Edge looks like a successor to Galaxy Round. In some parts of the world, it may arrive as late as 2015.
Reports suggest that Galaxy Note Edge will have a relatively higher price tag. It may cost up to $1,000 due to its display technology. The phone has a 5.6-inch Quad HD Youm OLED display. Its edge screen in the right side allows users to quickly access notifications, alerts, frequently used apps and other features without interrupting functions on the main screen.
The handset sports 3.7MP front camera and 16-megapixel main snapper.
