Twitter Inc Explains Hashtags To Users

Updated on

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) launched a new feature on Friday that will detail about the commonly used hashtags, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. User will get an explanation for various hashtags along with the tweets linked to the hashtags.

Still in experimenting phase

According to the Washington Post, the micro-blogging site is giving details on few selected Hashtags such as #smh (shaking my head). Twitter explained the meaning of #tbt that stands for “Throwback Thursday” and #ointb stands for “Orange is the new Black,” top rated Netflix series.  Nothing has been explained about the other hashtags such as #ConfessionNight (used by people to tweet out their secret confessions), or #MH17 (the Malaysia Airlines flight that crashed in Ukraine last month).

The feature is available only for the iPhone users, and is still in experimenting stage; the feature is yet to be opened for Android mobiles.  Hashtags can be created by anyone on Twitter, and are helpful for the users in finding particular tweets that interest them without following the person. Twitter is making efforts to understand its customers better and simplify features to be more consumers friendly. First-time users may find it difficult to select who to follow and who not to, which contains the company’s growth.

Twitter making it easier for users

Twitter has launched new features for its customer from time to time. The company is trying to put behind its slow growth rate even when user base is growing. Even though the revenue surged in the last quarter, loss for the company came in at $144.6 million.

Twitter posted the second-quarter result, where revenue came in at $312 million and an increase of 124% from the same quarter of the previous year. The company’s second-quarter results were fuelled by the new product features such as the service built around the World Cup, which showed the real-time scoring and match timelines. Twitter has a monthly active user base of 271 million, an increase of 6.3% from the 255 million in the previous quarter.

Similar to Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Twitter has a trend of adopting new ideas and then abandoning it quickly, when they not head to the right direction or are ignored by the users. However, any such feature that simplifies it for users will be welcomed by 271 million monthly users.
